Position SummarySt. Joseph's College of Nursing invites applications for Adjunct Faculty to teach Introductory Sociology , a foundational general education course serving nursing and allied health students. The course emphasizes core sociological concepts, social institutions, culture, and social inequalities, with intentional connections to healthcare, public service, and patient-centered care. This role includes responsibility for developing a complete asynchronous online course aligned with institutional and Quality Matters-informed standards.
PositionPurpose
St. Joseph's College of Nursing (SJCON) offers a single-purpose, hospital-based Associate in Applied Science degree with a major in Nursing. Program options include:
- A traditional weekday format following a two-year academic calendar
- The Dual Degree Partnership in Nursing (DDPN), a collaborative 1+2+1 program with Le Moyne College enabling students to earn both an AAS and BS in Nursing within four years
- The Evening/Weekend option completed over 18 months
- The Accelerated Dual Degree Partnership in Nursing (ADDPN) for students who already hold a BA or BS degree
The College is accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) and the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE).
Introductory Sociology serves as a general education requirement and provides students with a sociological lens to better understand patients, families, communities, and healthcare systems.
Job Expectations- Design and develop a complete asynchronous online course based on an approved syllabus, including weekly modules, learning activities, assessments, and instructional materials.
- Align course design and delivery with institutional course quality standards informed by Quality Matters principles.
- Collaborate with the College’s Quality Matters Coordinator and academic leadership during course development and review processes.
- Deliver engaging, well-structured weekly modules that support student learning and course objectives.
- Facilitate asynchronous online instruction using Canvas.
- Provide timely, meaningful feedback on discussions, assignments, and assessments.
- Apply adult learning principles and inclusive teaching practices to support nursing and allied health students.
- Recognize and respond to student learning needs, providing appropriate academic support.
- Contribute to course evaluation and continuous improvement efforts.
- Maintain prescribed adjunct faculty workload, including instructional responsibilities, student communication, and participation in course-level planning.
- Reliable computer hardware capable of supporting learning management system use
- Stable, high-speed internet access
- Webcam and microphone for meetings, training, or orientation as required
- Ability to use required instructional and communication software provided by the College
- Master’s degree in Sociology or a closely related field with at least 18 graduate credits in Sociology (official transcripts required upon hire). Demonstrated ability to teach at the college level.
- Experience using a learning management system (Canvas preferred). Strong written communication skills appropriate for asynchronous instruction.
- Prior experience teaching fully asynchronous online courses.
- Experience developing a fully online course from a syllabus or course outline.
- Training in Quality Matters (QM) or another recognized online course quality framework.
- Experience developing or revising online courses using evidence-based instructional design principles.
- Experience teaching nursing or allied health student populations.
- Familiarity with inclusive pedagogy and culturally responsive teaching practices.
