DescriptionPosition Summary
MassDOT is looking for a General Construction Inspector I (GCI I). This opportunity requires in-person visits to inspection sites throughout Massachusetts’ Highway Districts. The role involves working in an active construction and engineering environment, either independently or as part of a team with MassDOT staff or outside contractors.
Experience in on-site construction inspection of active roadway projects, transportation-related construction, bridges, etc., is valued. This entry-level position provides a pathway to grow within MassDOT and often leads to roles in Civil Engineering or Bridge Inspection career series.
This position may provide:
- Enhancement of on-site civil engineering and transportation construction experience
- Training and licensure in various procedures of construction inspection
- A gateway to internal MassDOT promotional opportunities, including the civil engineer series
The basic purpose is to oversee construction practices as maintenance and repair work occurs on various sites and to enforce compliance with plans, specifications, laws, rules, regulations, policies, and procedures. Limited remote work opportunities may be available to GCIs not assigned to Construction.
Duties and Responsibilities- Supervises and inspects construction project work for compliance with sound engineering principles, practices, and contractual standards.
- Performs on-site inspections of ongoing construction and/or repair activity on assigned projects.
- Follows through on inspections to ensure maintenance, repair, and/or replacement procedures are undertaken.
- Provides engineering data for civil engineering projects to plan, design, and construct structures and facilities.
- Performs calculations and/or checks computations made by others.
- Tests materials used in bituminous concrete pavements and cement concrete to ensure compliance with relevant standards.
- Prepares related documents (daily reports, pay slips, sketches, etc.) and data entry into correct computer programs.
- Performs related duties as required.
- Understanding of general construction math principles.
- Ability to operate equipment used in plane surveying.
- Ability to utilize traffic engineering principles related to traffic control through construction projects.
- Ability to understand, explain, and apply the laws, rules, regulations, policies, procedures, standards, guidelines and specifications governing assigned unit activities.
- Knowledge of terminology, symbols, codes and standard abbreviations used on maps and in civil engineering projects (highways and bridges).
- Knowledge of materials and equipment used in civil engineering projects (concrete, asphalt, lumber, etc.).
- Knowledge of the engineering properties of soils, including test methods and soil strength.
- Demonstrated knowledge of safety practices and procedures in civil engineering projects.
- Basic proficiency in inspection techniques used in civil engineering projects.
- Skill in the use of materials testing equipment.
This position is eligible for a five-thousand dollar ($5,000) signing bonus if newly hired rent MassDOT employees are not eligible. The signing bonus is paid in two parts: $3,000 in the first paycheck and $2,000 after successful completion of the probationary period.
