Job Description
To be considered for this position candidate must be serving permanently in the title of Transportation Specialist, or be reachable on the civil service list. Transportation Planning and Management (TPM) is responsible for the safe, efficient, and environmentally responsible movement of people and goods on the City’s streets, supporting the larger goals of economic and social vitality for people living, working, and doing business in New York City.
The Division’s responsibilities include planning, street design, technical analysis, signs, transit development, freight mobility and markings, ensuring the safety of motor vehicle occupants, pedestrians, and cyclists.
Under the direction of the SFU Deputy Director of Data & Design, the Bicycle Wayfinding Program Coordinator will manage planning and development activities to support the revamping and creation of a comprehensive bicycle way finding program. Duties include inventory and database creation, analysis of existing signage network, development of a citywide bicycle/greenway way finding strategy, on‑site user testing, facilitation of internal workshops, documentation of new design and siting guidelines, integration of new specifications across all way finding products, production of comprehensive signage network plans, coordination of maintenance and organization of bicycle facility GIS data for NYC DOT, creation of the annual NYC DOT bike map, review of consultant and partner agency work, and production of progress reports for DOT leadership.
- Conduct inventory and create GIS database of all greenway/bicycle way finding signage throughout NYC.
- Analyze existing signage network and produce a new comprehensive citywide bicycle/greenway way finding strategy plan, including new design, siting, and maintenance guidelines.
- Conduct on‑site user testing and analysis of the proposed strategy plan.
- Assist and facilitate internal workshops and coordination with partner agencies on design guidelines and inventory matters.
- Document new design, content, and siting guidelines.
- Facilitate the integration of new specifications across all bicycle, pedestrian, and transit related way finding products.
- Produce comprehensive signage network plans.
- Coordinate maintenance and organization of bicycle facility GIS data for NYC DOT.
- Create the annual NYC DOT bike map.
- Review work produced by consultants, partner agencies, or other NYC DOT units as needed.
- Produce progress reports for DOT leadership.
- Professional experience in urban planning or a related field.
- Previous experience with GIS mapping, Adobe Creative Suite (especially InDesign and Illustrator), CAD, Microsoft Office, and relational databases such as Microsoft Access.
- Excellent organization skills and an ability to focus on details and respond quickly to requests.
- Strong analytical/critical thinking skills.
- Ability to write and communicate clearly.
- Excellent time‑management skills.
- Demonstrated interest in cycling and the built environment of NYC.
- Willingness to work in the field in all seasons, traveling by bike, walking, or using mass transit.

Additional InformationTo be considered for this position candidate must be serving permanently in the title of Transportation Specialist, or be reachable on the civil service list. Less than 2 yrs City Service – New Hire Rate: $78,740 2 or more yrs City service – Minimum Incumbent Rate: $90,551. This position may be eligible for remote work up to 2 days per week, pursuant to the Remote Work Pilot Program agreed to between the City and DC37.
