Overview
Senior Piping Designer with Matrix Technologies is a lead designer for process and utility piping systems for oil and gas, specialty chemical, and food and beverage production facilities. Workload varies in size and complexity. Matrix has a reputation that allows selecting clients, flexible work arrangements, and a team equipped with the latest technology. Opportunities exist to split time between working from home and in the office.
Individuals contribute as a single project resource interfacing directly with clients as well as part of multi-discipline project teams. Ideal candidates will have experience designing industrial piping systems and be familiar with preparing piping fabrication and installation drawings using 3D modeling and design software.

Responsibilities- Lead designer for process and utility piping systems for oil and gas, specialty chemical, and food and beverage production facilities.
- Contribute as a single project resource interfacing with clients and as part of multi-discipline project teams.
- Design industrial piping systems and prepare piping fabrication and installation drawings using 3D modeling and design software.
- Legally eligible to work in the United States without sponsorship.
- Associates’ or Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology, or related field with piping fabrication and installation experience.
- 6-10 years of piping design experience.
- Preferred industry experience in one or more of the following:
Food & Beverage, Specialty Chemical, Oil & Gas. - Good written and oral communication skills.
- Ability to learn new tools and standards quickly and apply on projects.
- Ability to efficiently multitask between multiple projects.
- Ability to delegate tasks and mentor junior-level designers and drafters.
- Ability to interact with Project Managers and project Team Leads to complete assigned project scope and deliverables.
- Ability to develop and maintain positive client relationships.
- Ability to travel 25% to 30% locally and 10% overnight.
- Knowledge of industry best practices and standards for piping design and layouts.
- Ability to gather field data and prepare project documentation.
- Ability to read P&IDs and extract necessary information.
- Ability to perform design and engineering calculations in accordance with accepted practices, company standards, and client specifications.
- Ability to create, update, and maintain engineering drawings, including piping plans, piping details, and isometrics; proficient in Plant 3D or AutoCAD.
- Experience utilizing 3D scans (point clouds) and working with 3D models.
- Knowledge of Revit, BIM
360, Navisworks Manage, Plant 3D. - Ability to prepare project scopes of work, preliminary design concepts, cost estimates, and construction packages for small to medium projects ($50,000 to $5,000,000 total installed cost).
- Experience with steam system design.
- Ability to develop P&IDs.
- Occasionally required to stand, walk, sit, stoop, kneel, crouch; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; talk and hear.
- Occasionally lift and/or move objects up to 25 pounds.
- Specific vision abilities include close, distance, color, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
- May perform industrial field work with exposure to hazardous locations, inclement weather, moving parts, noise, ladders, uneven ground, and stairs.
- May involve exposure to a wide range of known food allergens.
We offer market-competitive compensation for an Electrical Controls Engineer with a base range of $91,000 to $115,000 annually, plus a total compensation package including quarterly bonuses, 401(k) matching, and overtime. Salaries are based on experience, skills, and qualifications.
