We are seeking a Senior Controls Engineer / Lead Electrical Engineer who is deeply hands-on and technically strong. This role is ideal for a senior or lead-level engineer who enjoys being involved across the full lifecycle of controls and electrical engineering work and is interested in gradually developing into a technical or people leadership role.
This is not a fit for engineering managers who are primarily removed from day-to-day technical work. The right candidate is someone who still enjoys designing, programming, commissioning, and troubleshooting systems firsthand.
You’ll join a small, highly technical team (currently three engineers) and play a key role in shaping projects, mentoring junior engineers, and influencing technical direction.
Key Responsibilities
- Own the full scope of controls and electrical engineering, including:
- Electrical design and documentation
- PLC programming
- System commissioning and startup
- Develop and maintain PLC programs using:
- Siemens
- Create and modify electrical schematics using AutoCAD Electrical
- Support VFDs and drive systems (configuration, troubleshooting, integration)
- Work closely with internal teams during system build, commissioning, and startup phases
- Provide technical leadership and mentorship to junior engineers
- Participate in on-site troubleshooting and system optimization
- Collaborate with leadership on project planning and technical strategy
Required Qualifications
- 10+ years of controls and/or electrical engineering experience
- Strong, hands-on PLC programming experience with:
- Siemens
- Proficiency with AutoCAD Electrical
- Experience across the full project lifecycle: design ? programming ? commissioning ? startup
- Comfortable working primarily on-site (Aurora-based role)
- Open to limited travel (approximately 10–15%)
Preferred / Nice-to-Have
- Experience with VFDs and drive systems
- Prior experience mentoring or leading engineers in a technical capacity
- Background in industrial automation, manufacturing, or similar environments
Ideal Candidate Profile
- Senior or Lead Engineer who:
- Is highly technical and enjoys being hands-on
- Wants to grow into increased technical leadership and/or people management over time
- Comfortable wearing multiple hats in a small team environment
- Not a fit for candidates who prefer a purely managerial, non-technical role
- On-site role with limited flexibility for work-from-home (a couple of days as needed)
- Initial phone screen
- On-site interview
- Senior-level candidates may meet with 1–2 additional leadership team members
