What Your Job Will Be Like:

We are seeking a hardworking and dedicated postdoctoral appointee to work at the interface between physics- and process-based predictive models and large spectral/temporal datasets, specifically focused upon persistently collected streams of multi-sensor electromagnetic data. Forward modeling efforts will include predicting signal source terms, the processes governing them, and their subsequent propagation to deployed sensors. Advanced uncertainty quantification (UQ) and sensitivity analysis (SA) approaches will be used to characterize and calibrate computational models resulting in predictions with quantified uncertainty.

Real-time model calibration, via integrating robust calibration methods within a facility digital twin, will also be pursued.

On any given day, you may be called on to:
  • Perform self-directed analysis on provided data sets.
  • Present/share results at team meetings with senior staff.
  • Represent Sandia efforts at multi-lab collaboration meetings.
  • Create publications and present results at conferences/workshops.

Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite. This position is located in Livermore, CA, and the annual salary for this position is $110,000.

Qualifications We Require:
  • PhD in Engineering, Chemistry, Physics, Applied Mathematics, or other relevant, related field.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance.
Qualifications We Desire:
  • Proven experience in computational electromagnetic modeling/simulation.
  • Expertise in machine learning techniques, including supervised and unsupervised learning, along with uncertainty quantification.
  • Strong mathematical foundation in linear algebra, inverse methods, optimization, and statistical inference.
  • High Performance Computing (HPC) experience on GPUs & and multicore CPUs.
  • Aptitude in Scientific Computing.
  • Demonstrated experience developing in Python, Matlab, Fortran, Julia, and/or C/C++.
  • Proficiency in the Python data science ecosystem, including Num Py, Sci Py, Pandas, Jupyter, Anaconda, Scikit-Learn, and PyTorch/Tensor Flow.
  • Knowledge of modern programming practices, including clean coding, software carpentry, unit testing, version control, IDEs, and LLM-assisted coding.
About Our Team:

The Proliferation Signatures Discovery and Exploitation Department applies deep knowledge of optical sensing techniques to topics of relevance to Sandia and the nation. With backgrounds primarily in laser physics and chemistry, the group focuses on applications in hyperspectral sensing, trace particle detection and attribution and atmospheric measurement and modeling. In addition, the department is working on developing new laser technologies and new laser-based capabilities, such as quantum sensing.

The work is supported by various internal and external customers.

Posting Duration:

This posting will be open for application submissions for a minimum of seven (7) calendar days, including the ‘posting date’. Sandia reserves the right to extend the posting date at any time.
