Electrical and Controls Engineer; Hydropower

Job Title: Electrical & Controls Engineer (Hydropower)

Location: Remote (Home office, based within a day’s drive of Albany, NY) with frequent travel to field sites across New York

Classification: Contract to hire, expect 6 month contract phase

Renew Hydro is a small but growing hydropower company. We currently operate 5 hydropower sites across the state of New York. The person hired for this role will be responsible for designing and implementing electrical and controls fixes and new build systems at the hydropower sites that we own and operate. This person will spend a significant amount of their time working in the field, troubleshooting systems and will also be afforded the independence of working remotely from their home office.

As a successful candidate for this role will be able to demonstrate that they have a track record of independently solving typical electrical and controls problems hands on at hydropower or other similar power generating facilities.

• Troubleshoot, commission, and optimize hydropower electrical & control systems in the field
• Develop, maintain, and improve PLC logic, SCADA/HMI screens, and control architectures
• Diagnose issues with switch gear, relays, excitation systems, generators, VFDs, and instrumentation
• Document designs, provide status updates regarding work performed in the field, and propose robust engineering solutions
• Collaborate across mechanical and civil work streams to resolve integrated system issues
• Provide direction to external contractors and write and review requests for proposals and scopes of work for external contractors
• Assist operators to troubleshoot electrical and controls systems both remotely and in person in the field
• Travel to project sites frequently—expected travel could be up to 50% of the time. Generally, travel would not be required on weekends.

• Mid-career engineer (≈5–7+ years experience) with strong hands-on troubleshooting instincts and experience working in power generation. Education or experience in electrical engineering, certified electrician, controls engineering, integration engineer, and/or automation technician or other related fields.
• Have training or experience in PLC programming, power electronics, automation
• Comfortable working independently and owning problems end-to-end. Willing to both work on a computer to come up with designs and documentation as well as go to the field and implement your designs and/or help figure out why existing systems are not working and fix them.
• Practical experience with PLC and control system programming
• Capable with electrical systems, instrumentation, and industrial field equipment.
• Comfort and expertise to safely work with high voltage electrical systems is a plus
• Knowledge to know when something is more dangerous than you are trained to safely work on is a requirement
• Some skills with basic IT capabilities (networking, firewalls, VPNs, basic cybersecurity awareness, POE camera systems) is also a plus
