What Your Job Will Be Like

We are seeking a dedicated and motivated Postdoctoral Appointee in Power System Research with a strong background in research and development for the electric grid. The selected candidate will focus on making technical contributions to ongoing and creative new research projects, joining a multi‑disciplinary and hard‑working team.

The work will include one or multiple of the following research areas: capacity expansion planning; resource adequacy; power system resilience and security; power system protection; fast and adaptive protection methods; artificial intelligence applied to electric power systems; and/or power system dynamics and stability.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Perform complex engineering/scientific analysis in the area of power systems
  • Demonstrate creativity and ingenuity in providing software and analytical solutions
  • Work with colleagues and external collaborators to develop innovative solutions to emerging challenges facing the power industry
  • Publish research outcomes in peer‑reviewed journals, at conferences, etc.
  • Present research findings to sponsors and externally to professional communities (e.g., IEEE, CIGRE, industry workshops, etc.)

Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite.

Qualifications We Require
  • PhD in Electrical Engineering or other relevant, related field
  • Experience in one or more of the following areas: grid protection, protection relays and their applications, settings, and testing; capacity expansion planning, resource adequacy; power system resilience and security; artificial intelligence applied to electric power systems; power system dynamics and stability; and/or cyber‑physical system analysis and security.
  • Technical knowledge in power system simulation and analysis
  • Publications in one or more of the R&D research areas listed above
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE L‑level security clearance
Qualifications We Desire
  • Strong interpersonal communication abilities, including verbal and written communication skills, as evidenced through a solid publication record
  • Self‑motivated and able to work independently with minimal direction and ability to perform in a team environment
  • Demonstrated success presenting technical findings at conferences and/or webinars
  • Proven programming ability and analytical skills, including proficiency with Python or MATLAB
  • Experience with commercial power system softwares, e.g. CAPE, ASPEN, Power World, PSSE, PSLF, CYME, Synergi, DiGSILENT Power Factory, OpenDSS, PSCAD, Opal‑RT, and/or RTDS.
