We are seeking qualified, experienced Archaeological Field Technicians for various archaeological projects throughout California on an on‑call/as‑needed basis. Immediate needs are in the northern and central California regions, but we also have opportunities throughout other areas of California and other states. Candidates could be connected with our Oakland, Sacramento, or Auburn offices; proximity to an office is not a determining factor.
DutiesAnd Responsibilities
- Archaeological survey, excavation, and monitoring
- Bachelor’s degree in Archaeology or Anthropology
- Current valid driver’s license and ability to safely operate a 4WD vehicle
- Insurance: valid driver’s license with active personal automobile liability insurance by first day of employment; ability to obtain vehicle insurance if necessary
- Pre‑employment requirements: federal contractor eligibility, pre‑employment drug test, and background check
- Experience with pedestrian survey, testing/evaluation, and monitoring
- Skilled in field equipment operation, including GPS, cameras, and tablets
- Physical ability to carry up to 40 lb of equipment and walk or hike for long periods
- Willingness to work in difficult weather and other challenging environmental conditions
- Willingness to travel to a project location for several consecutive days
- Completion of an accredited field school certification
- Prior archaeological survey experience in California or adjacent areas, including recording site and isolate types
- Knowledge of and experience using ESRI Collector
Hourly rate: $21.00–31.00*
- Final agreed‑upon compensation will be based on factors such as experience, education, certifications, skills, and location. Successful candidates must pass a pre‑employment drug test and background check prior to starting.
- Outdoor or office‑based environment; routine use of computers, phones, printers, etc.
- Outdoor activity may involve walking/trekking over uneven terrain, extreme weather, and extended periods of time.
- Project site visits may include excessive noise, uneven surfaces, extreme weather, and moving vehicles and equipment.
- Work on a computer, sit, or stand for long periods in an office or remote office setting.
- Capable of bending, squatting, climbing ladders, and lifting up to 35 lb unassisted; 50 lb in a team lift.
- Attend meetings, both in person and virtually, and speak on the phone with peers, clients, etc.
- Vision: close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and focus adjustment.
