THE POSITION

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) is in need of a Licensed Professional Geologist within our Lab Testing Section of the Construction and Materials Division. This position gives you the opportunity to provide technical and scientific support within the Aggregate, Concrete, Cement, and Soils Unit to ensure operations are conducted in a timely and efficient manner.

DESCRIPTION OF WORK

In this role, you will be performing petrographic analyses on aggregate as well as rock and concrete samples, to determine mineral composition, texture, and fabric for evaluating probable behavior in the field. You will also determine the Skid Resistance Level (SRL) for Bulletin 14 sources, and interpret strati graphic and petrographic information; conduct detailed visual examinations of Portland Cement concrete samples in forensic investigations;

prepare and evaluate concrete samples and thin sections for assessment of composition and factors potentially contributing to poor field performance; and prepare reports on your findings. Additionally, you will have the opportunity to provide expert consultation to district personnel on material specific issues and coordinate with the Concrete Laboratory and Unit Managers on new and modifications of existing methods and testing apparatus.

WORK SCHEDULE AND ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
  • Full-time employment.
  • Work hours are 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday – Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
  • Telework:
    You may have the opportunity to work from home (telework) part-time. In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection and work from an approved location inside Pennsylvania. If you are unable to telework, you will have the option to report to the headquarters office in Harrisburg. The ability to telework is subject to change at any time.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY
  • This position requires possession of an active license as a professional geologist issued by the Pennsylvania State Registration Board for Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors and Geologists.
  • This position requires possession of an active Pennsylvania non-commercial Class C driver's license or equivalent.
