Overview
Bring your Professional Land Surveyor expertise to the City of Madison Engineering Division! This position offers the opportunity to serve as a key technical and supervisory leader within the Engineering Division, coordinating the City’s Official Mapping and public land records program. You will apply your expertise to complex land records and survey work, completing and reviewing consultant-prepared documents and exercising independent professional judgment, discretion, and initiative.
Working under the direction of a Deputy and City Engineer, you will help shape program development, ensure compliance with engineering requirements, and support projects that directly serve the community.
Hours: Standard work hours are typically 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM Monday through Friday, with the opportunity for a hybrid remote work schedule — three days working from home and two days in the office may be offered after training is completed.

Responsibilities- Private Development Plan Review and Related Mapping/Land Records Coordination – Perform technical review of proposed subdivision plats, certified survey maps, boundary surveys, conditional use, demolition, rezoning, and site plan verification applications. Identify issues and provide comments to assist applicant in complying with Engineering, Statutory, Wisconsin Administrative Code and Madison General Ordinance requirements. Verify that all Engineering requirements have been satisfied prior to signing off.
- Coordinate, review, and prepare documents related to public rights, restrictions, easements, and right-of-way dedication for public infrastructure construction improvements. Ensure that Operations’ needs for maintenance access are satisfied.
- Require submittal of plat tie references and tie sheet/monument condition reports for monument perpetuation and preservation. Assist in the coordination of Public Land Survey monument perpetuation and preservation within the City of Madison and its Extraterritorial Jurisdiction.
- Oversee and/or review applicant’s submittals and Computer Automated Design (CAD) submittals to ensure all conform to conditional approval requirements and City standards.
- City of Madison Public Works Projects and Mapping / Land Records Coordination – Provide technical review of projects to identify public rights, right-of-way and/or easement acquisitions necessary for the projects. Coordinate with City of Madison Office of Real Estate Services on the associated projects necessary to acquire rights, right-of-way and/or easements or release the same through arm’s length transactions or eminent domain acquisitions through relocation order or transportation project plat processes.
Create projects within the Engineering Projects database and the Real Estate Projects database. Prepare and/or oversee preparation of necessary plats, maps, and legal descriptions. Coordinate and provide technical review of consultant prepared plats, maps, and legal descriptions. Prepare and/or oversee preparation of necessary resolutions and related documents and coordinate required City processes. Require submittal of tie sheet/monument condition reports for monument perpetuation and preservation.
Assist in the coordination of Public Land Survey monument perpetuation and preservation within the City of Madison.
