What Your Job Will Be Like:

We are seeking a R&D S&E, Systems Engineer who will blend engineering, analytics, and problem‑solving to understand how complex manufacturing operations work and then design ways to make them safer, faster, and smarter. The selected candidate will build models, run simulations, analyze data, and work directly on production floors to uncover opportunities for improvement. The selected candidate will also collaborate closely with world‑class experts and contribute to facility redesigns and strategic modernization efforts across the Nuclear Security Enterprise.

This role involves solving difficult problems, working with high‑impact systems, and using tools like Power Bi, Python, simulation software, and optimization to guide decisions to increase productivity.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

Gather information, perform assessments and studies with production staff, conduct production floor walkthroughs and processes mapping activities, and translate production information into model data

Develop analytics models to assess, optimize, and make predictions for various production authorities involved in development and production activities

Document model results, identify emerging areas of opportunity, lead investigative and exploratory projects, and present findings to peers and senior management

Collaborate with multi‑functional teams and other specialists on large, center‑level projects

Lead facility redesign efforts including accurate capture of current state and implementation of methods to determine alternative future states

Work on other projects to be determined by the organization’s needs and individual interests. These may include supporting strategic projects that seek to adapt or advance Center capabilities to meet new needs across the Nuclear Security Enterprise (NSE). These projects may include collaboration with a variety of internal and external NSE partners

Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite.

Salary Range:

$99,400 - $193,600

* Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate’s experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require:

A Bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline, or an equivalent combination of directly relevant education and engineering or scientific experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform independent research and development.

Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q clearance

Qualifications We Desire:

The ideal R&D S&E Systems Engineer candidate for Sandia National Laboratories will in addition possess the following:

Graduate degree in Engineering or a highly related field where an independent research project was a graduation requirement (e.g., independent project, thesis, or dissertation)
