We are seeking a Senior Environmental Engineer to drive our agency toward this mission.
Job SummaryThe Remediation Engineer specializes in the cleanup of petroleum hydrocarbons and related contaminants of concern. The senior-level subject matter expert will assess third-party remediation and corrective action plans for leaking underground storage tanks (USTs); and conduct technical evaluations of the design, implementation, and operation of remediation systems to ensure efficacy and regulatory compliance. Day-to-day activities include reviewing reports, proposals, and documentation of work performed.
You will mentor junior staff and develop standard procedures that drive petroleum-based cleanup efforts at UST facilities.
This position is available for remote work on a full-time basis within Arizona (including virtual office arrangements).

Job Duties- Contribute to cross-divisional environmental issues.
- Lead the development of complex environmental calculations.
- Provide a high level of engineering support for staff.
- Review, evaluate, and provide comments on corrective action plans.
- Review remediation proposals involving environmental or public health impacts.
- Evaluate and support open leaking underground storage tanks cases; assess proposed and ongoing remedial activities.
- Coordinate with responsible parties, owners, operators and consultants to discuss UST site characterization and guide appropriate cleanup activities.
- Provide technical assistance to the regulated community, staff, and the public regarding environmental impact and regulation.
- Evaluate remedial proposals, performance, and associated costs.
- Conduct reviews of Corrective Action Plans for technical appropriateness and regulatory compliance.
- Complete expert-level review of complex technical/program documents and applications related to environmental impact and regulation.
- Mentor and audit the technical work and review products of junior staff.
- Provide expert testimony on legal cases involving remediation engineering.
- Expertise in design, planning, permitting, testing, implementation, and performance monitoring of remedial technologies for petroleum hydrocarbons and related chemicals in soil, groundwater, and LNAPL, including AS/SVE, MPE, pump & treat, bioremediation, and ISCO.
- Expertise in developing Conceptual Site Models (CSMs) and remedial objectives for soils, groundwater, and LNAPL.
- Proficiency in reviewing and analyzing technical feasibility, and cost estimation for bench/pilot testing and comparison of multiple technologies for full-scale implementation.
- Proficiency in developing and reviewing remedial performance monitoring plans and results, including transition criteria.
- Experience in operation, maintenance, and optimization of injection and extraction remediation systems.
- Experience in characterizing LNAPL bodies for extent, composition, and stability using multiple technologies.
- Knowledge of Arizona state and federal underground storage tank regulations.
- Bachelor of Science in an engineering discipline.
- Twelve (12) or more years of remediation engineering experience. Master’s degree may substitute for two years of experience.
- Professional Engineering certification through the Arizona Board of Technical Registration or equivalent in a reciprocal jurisdiction.
