What Your Job Will Be LikeWe are seeking an experienced Mechanical Technologist to join our GTS Experimental Operations team. In this role, you will be part of a group responsible for daily operations in the high-pressure testing facility as well as a welding and brazing facility.
On any given day, you may be called on to:
- Design, build, modify, repair, and operate a wide variety of mechanical and electrical apparatus and equipment.
- Conduct experimental tests in close collaboration with GTS engineering staff.
- Troubleshoot electronic control systems for various welding and laboratory apparatus.
- Devise, fabricate, and assemble new or modified electronics hardware and wiring.
- Set up and test complete prototype units and subassemblies under operational conditions.
- Analyze data and recommend modifications to components or test procedure to meet desired specifications.
Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite 100% of the time.
Air Travel up to 15% may be required

Salary Range$88,900 - $171,900
* Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.
Qualifications We Require- High school diploma with a minimum of three years of directly related experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience
- General fabrication (hands-on/mechanical) experience
- Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. DOE Q security clearance
- Experience with the troubleshooting of electronic components and hardware
- At least 2 years of laboratory experimental experience required
- Experience in a laboratory R&D environment
- Experience designing and fabricating mechanical hardware
- Experience with manual or CNC machining
- CAD experience
- Experience designing and assembling gas handling equipment
- AA degree or equivalent experience in mechanical engineering technology
- Experience working with high-pressure systems
- Experience working with vacuum systems
- Experience using DMMs, oscilloscopes, soldering equipment, and other electronic test equipment
- Experience troubleshoot PLC and industrial system controllers
- Experience in data acquisition
- Experience with fabrication of electric cables and circuitry
- Welding/brazing experience
- Active DOE Q-level security clearance
The GTS Experimental Operations group is a group of engineers and technologists who are responsible for the operation of laboratory experimental facilities that support the Gas Transfer Systems mission. The group operates a high-pressure testing facility, and a welding/brazing facility that conduct a range of high-rigor experimental research and development activities including high pressure gas experiments, vacuum experiments, explosive testing, mechanical assembly and light fabrication, welding and brazing development, and other gas transfer system characterization and development tests.
Our personnel routinely interact with other Sandia engineering and research groups, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, Los Alamos National Laboratory, production agencies (located in Kansas City, Savannah River, and Texas), the National Nuclear Security Agency (NNSA), and the Department of Defense (DOD).
