Position
Associate Civil Engineer – Drainage Engineering Design and Planning Section, City of Sacramento, Department of Utilities. With supervisor approval, incumbents may perform intermittent remote work while physically residing within the Sacramento region or have the ability to report to a City of Sacramento worksite on short notice.
Responsibilities- Supervise and participate in the preparation of plans and specifications for water utility, street, storm drain, sanitary sewer pump stations, street lighting, traffic signal, buildings, and related public works and City building projects; research project design requirements and perform complex calculations to prepare material cost estimates.
- Assign routine inspection, investigation, design, and drafting tasks to technical subordinates; review completed work and assist in solving difficult problems.
- Research building codes, publications, and industry information sources.
- Develop and revise design and construction standards.
- Participate in the implementation of the City’s traffic and transportation engineering programs; prepare and revise plans and specifications for traffic related projects; prepare special studies and reports and coordinate major projects.
- Participate in the City’s Building Code Compliance program.
- Investigate field problems affecting property owners, contractors, and maintenance operations.
- Order survey, mapping, and data collection.
- Prepare estimates and feasibility reports for new or modified services and structures.
- Administer contracts for construction projects.
- Participate in plan check, review, and processing of plans for private developments affecting streets, sewers, drains, and related public works facilities to ensure compliance with all City requirements.
- Check building plans for compliance with City building codes and ordinances.
- Prepare special engineering studies and reports.
- Serve as staff to City commissions, boards, and committees on public works, utility matters, or building code appeals issues.
- Coordinate planning, design, and construction activities with other City departments, divisions, and sections, and with outside agencies.
- Supervise, train, and evaluate lower-level professional, technical, and clerical subordinates.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Assistant Civil Engineer (required for entry)
- Knowledge of principles and practices of civil engineering as applied to public works, utilities, traffic, and building construction projects.
- Understanding of methods, materials, and techniques used in the construction of public works, building, and utilities projects.
- Familiarity with current literature and sources of information regarding civil engineering and building codes and ordinances.
- Ability to perform complex engineering computations and to design, supervise, and review engineering plans and studies.
- Strong written and oral communication skills.
- Proficiency with engineering and drafting instruments and equipment.
- Possession of a valid Engineer‑In‑Training (EIT) certificate (or required professional experience).
Associate Civil Engineer (for advancement)
- In addition to the Assistant Civil Engineer qualifications:
- Knowledge of City engineering policies and procedures.
- Understanding of principles of supervision and training.
- Ability to perform complex professional engineering work with minimal supervision.
- Ability to supervise and train subordinates.
- Two years of experience comparable to that of an Assistant Civil Engineer in the City of Sacramento.
- Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from an accredited college or university (or equivalent combination of education and experience).
- Possession of a Certificate of Registration as a Professional Engineer in the State of California (verifiable).
- Submission of proof of education and certification at the time of appointment.
