The Senior Hardware Test Engineer will be responsible for developing, executing, and sustaining hardware test and characterization strategies for camera modules, PCBAs, and related subsystems. This position requires strong hands-on board-level debugging skills, experience working across hardware and embedded system interactions, and the ability to translate complex test results into clear, actionable recommendations. The Senior Hardware Test Engineer’s primary customers are internal hardware, firmware, and manufacturing teams, enabling them to efficiently debug issues, validate performance, and improve product reliability from prototype through production.

This role reports directly to Matterport’s Director of Manufacturing Engineering.

This position is located in Sunnyvale, CA and is in office Monday through Thursday and work from home on Friday.

Responsibilities
  • Develop and execute test, validation, and characterization plans for camera modules, PCBAs, and related subsystems across prototype, engineering, and production builds.
  • Perform board-level debugging and root cause analysis of failing hardware, including sensors, power rails, clocks, high-speed interfaces, and supporting circuitry.
  • Diagnose and resolve issues across hardware, firmware, and system interactions in collaboration with cross-functional engineering teams.
  • Identify failure modes and provide recommendations for design, process, and test improvements.
  • Analyze test data, identify trends, and communicate findings and recommendations to stakeholders in a clear, data-driven manner.
  • Develop and improve automation for test procedures and data collection to improve efficiency, test coverage, and data quality across engineering and production runs.
  • Set up, qualify, and maintain camera test infrastructure, including bench debug environments, characterization stations, and automated test software.
  • Support the transfer of test methods, equipment, and processes from engineering development into high-volume manufacturing.
  • Partner with hardware, firmware, image quality, and manufacturing teams to improve debug efficiency, yield, test coverage, and product reliability.
  • Create and maintain test documentation, debug procedures, and standard operating instructions.
  • Train technicians and operators on test equipment, software tools, and debug procedures.
Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree required from an accredited, not for profit, in person university or college.
  • A track record of commitment to prior employers.
