Project Overview

The Rapid Growth of AI and digitalization is fueling unprecedented demand for data centers that require large, reliable sources of energy. In response to this market trend, the Renewables & Clean Power team has signed an early works contract to build one of the largest gas‑fired power generation facilities in the United States. The candidate will act as the Lead Piping Field Engineer for the upcoming project, beginning in the home office in Reston and later relocating to Cheyenne for long‑term assignment.

This position is contingent upon project award.

Job Summary

The Construction Lead Piping Field Engineer is responsible for activities of the piping field engineering team relating to construction engineering within the piping discipline. Duties include interpreting piping design drawings and specifications, overseeing piping installation/fabrication (pipe hangers and inline piping components), verifying materials on site, and providing technical direction to field personnel as required.

Major Responsibilities Leadership/Supervision
  • Supervises and/or directs assigned craft activities.
  • Schedules work and reviews performance of each craft.
  • Participates in developing contract/scopes, budgets, and negotiations.
  • Engages with the team through CPM, competency development, and feedback.
Planning/Productivity
  • Coordinates operational plans.
  • Collaborates with other disciplines and client representatives.
  • Supervises development of construction drawings and sketches.
  • Supports development of construction methods and procedures.
  • Supervises planning of workforce, material, and equipment requirements.
  • Prepares installation work packages for foremen.
  • Reports installed quantities to Field Engineering for verification and claiming.
  • Reviews project controls documents on progress, cost, and schedule.
  • Participates in development and implementation of level 4 and level 5 project schedules.
  • Oversees preparation of reports, forecasts, and summaries of construction progress and expenditures.
Safety/Quality
  • Implements Zero Accident Philosophy and ensures adherence by craft and other personnel.
  • Ensures the latest design documents are used and all design changes are approved before implementation.
  • Ensures construction operations comply with specifications, schedules, and budgets.
  • Implements corporate/project policies, procedures, and instructions.
  • Monitors work activities and ensures quality of workmanship.
Technical
  • Interprets engineering design documents, vendor documents, and technical documents with field engineers, foremen, and craft professionals.
  • Oversees engineering solutions with subcontractors and craft leaders.
  • Coordinates with design on constructability issues.
  • Oversees preparation of testing processes and required test equipment.
  • Supports development of commodity installation means and methods.
  • Applies industry and international codes & standards relevant to scope.
  • Utilizes applicable automation software and processes.
Education and Experience Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree (or international equivalent) and 5–8 years of relevant experience, or 9–12 years of relevant work experience.
Required Knowledge and Skills
  • Experience on combined‑cycle facilities preferred.
  • Knowledge of modularization of piping, pipe racks, above‑ground & below‑ground systems, and line testing preferred.
  • Computer literate in word processing, spreadsheets, and database applications.
  • Working knowledge of applicable industry codes and standards.
  • Excellent communication and problem‑solving skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage and lead teams.
  • Promotes a safe work ethic and environment within the craft.
  • Able to work extended schedules and night shifts as required.
  • Demonstrates commitment to Environment, Safety and Health (ES&H) and Zero Accident safety program.
  • Must have work authorization in the United States.
