Position Overview
The Office of Physical Plant at Penn State seeks a Controls Engineer to provide engineering controls support to all utility operating units of the University, including all industrial control systems.
Key Responsibilities- Develop control systems and strategies for industrial applications.
- Perform system and network calculations to ensure stability and reliability.
- Program and implement PLCs, SCADA systems, and DCS systems.
- Collaborate with other engineers, technicians, and clients to discuss and solve system‐related problems.
- Develop and maintain system documentation, including functional specifications, design specifications, test plans, and operational manuals.
- Integrate different components of a control system, such as controllers, sensors, and actuators.
- Assess and upgrade existing control systems as required.
- Provide technical support to the Controls Supervisor and assigned technicians.
- Ensure all Penn State, regulatory, and safety requirements are met.
- Stay updated with the latest control system technologies and industry trends.
- Perform design reviews and maintain the Design and Construction Standards.
- Specify, test, and implement steam plant generator control systems, black start procedures, and island mode automation.
- Assist with the integration of all utilities into a centralized control room.
- Support electrical utility engineering for new construction, power system analysis, and distribution planning.
This role can be filled under two classifications:
- Operations Engineer – Senior Professional:
Bachelor’s Degree, 6+ years of relevant experience, no required certifications. - Operations Engineer – Advanced Professional:
Bachelor’s Degree, 3+ years of relevant experience, no required certifications.
Employment with the University requires successful completion of background check(s) in accordance with University policies. The position requires operation of a motor vehicle; a valid driver’s license and motor vehicle records check will be required. Penn State does not sponsor or manage visa sponsorship.
