The rapid growth of AI and digitalization is fueling unprecedented demand for data centers that require large, reliable sources of energy. In response to this market trend, the Renewables & Clean Power (R&CP) team have signed an early works contract to build one of the largest gas fired power generation facilities in the U.S. This project is of significant scale and complexity, and our team is helping the customer progress early‑stage development, that would lead to the start of full EPC delivery this year.
The candidate will act as the Area Field Engineer on the upcoming project. The candidate may start in the home office in Reston, VA, as single status, to support preconstruction planning, ahead of project mobilization to the field when the candidate will locate on a long‑term assignment to Cheyenne, Wyoming. This position is contingent upon project award.
Job SummaryThe Area Field Engineer (Switchyard) is responsible for the organization and direction of multi‑discipline field engineering personnel and activities relating to construction engineering, subcontracts, and engineering liaison with the design functional group. You will oversee all work in this area which will consist of Civil, Electrical, and Subcontract work scopes.
Major Responsibilities Leadership/Supervision- Proactively engages with teams' development through CPM, competence development/assessment and feedback.
- Supervises a broad range of construction engineering work within a specific engineering discipline or different disciplines within a specific area.
- Directs construction engineering activities of the assigned construction engineering staff, ensuring compliance with procedures.
- Approves staffing requisitions as delegated by the Site Manager.
- Assesses needs and develops field engineering training plan for the project.
- Coordinates with design on constructability issues.
- Establishes a design/field engineering working relationship and lines of communication with the Project Engineer including agreement on engineering deliverables.
- Supervises team of discipline field engineers responsible for quantity take‑off, control, reporting and forecasting.
- Directs design of temporary construction facilities as required.
- Coordinates the interfacing between the construction automation plan and the project controls program at the job site.
- Works with client's resident engineering and operating personnel to coordinate construction activities.
- Demonstrates knowledge of AWP and turnover work packaging.
- Directs preparation of requisitions for field procured materials, material substitution, services, and equipment.
- Possesses responsibility for quantity take‑off, control, reporting and forecasting.
- Oversees and administers automation and ensure direct reports are competent in their respective automation tools.
- Utilizes quantity data analysis to make strategic decisions for go work plans, performance analysis, unit rate analysis, man‑power curves.
- Ensures zero accident philosophy and requirements are implemented and adhered to by craft and others when in the operational area, and tools and equipment are in safe condition and operated safely.
- Possesses responsibility for ensuring compliance with procedures.
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Construction Management or other relevant technical discipline from an accredited university as well as a minimum of 8-10 years of relevant work experience, or 12-14 years of relevant experience in the absence of a degree.
- A minimum of five years field engineering experience in at least one discipline as well as a minimum of two years supervisory experience.
- Knowledge of direct hire construction.
- Experienced implementing and utilizing Bechtel Standard Work Process Procedures.
- Thorough knowledge of construction activities as they relate to engineering disciplines, cost and scheduling, and contract administration.
