Professional Engineer – Bridge Design )

The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) is recruiting two Professional Engineers in Bridge Design. This role is a professional structural design engineer responsible for final design work, design review, and final bridge plan checking on a project level basis with minimal guidance from the Bridge Area Engineer. The Engineer also handles preliminary design work, which may be done in conjunction with or independently from the Bridge Area Engineer.

Because bridge design impacts public safety, the law requires that the work be performed by a licensed professional engineer in responsible charge. The Engineer must be fully competent in all conventional aspects of bridge design and have a minimum working knowledge of seismic analysis and design, as well as the requirements of preliminary design.

Responsibilities
  • Perform final design work, design review, and final bridge plan checking for assigned projects.
  • Lead preliminary design work in collaboration with or independently from the Bridge Area Engineer.
  • Provide engineering judgment and decision‑making with minimal supervision.
  • Prepare calculations, reports, and documentation required to complete a design project.
  • Evaluate structural calculations and contract documents for clarity, accuracy, completeness, and constructability; identify construction and design conflicts.
  • Apply engineering principles, techniques, and procedures to a variety of situations and circumstances.
  • Effectively communicate engineering information in written and verbal form to designers, engineers, non‑technical personnel, and the public.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited program with civil structural engineering courses in structural analysis, steel design, and reinforced concrete design, or a related field.
  • Minimum of four (4) years of professional experience in structural analysis, steel design, and reinforced concrete design.
  • Registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) in Montana; PE registration in another state eligible for Montana PE registration through comity within six months of hire is acceptable.
  • Knowledge of AASHTO Design Specifications, bridge design standards and policies, industry guidelines, and bridge and road construction methods.
  • Understanding of seismic analysis and design and preliminary design requirements.
  • Ability to evaluate contract documents and construction methods for conflicts and constructability.
  • Proficiency with office engineering instruments, computers, and handheld calculators.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Graduate degrees with concentrations in structural analysis and design considered on a case‑by‑case basis.
Benefits
  • Culture of public service and a commitment to work/life balance.
  • Potential hybrid remote work arrangement available.
  • Access to Montana Health Centers and low‑cost clinics for state employees and families.
  • State retirement plan and additional savings opportunities (deferred compensation).
  • Overtime compensation or compensatory time for all hours over 40 in a workweek.
  • Benefits applicable on first day of employment.
