Overview

Help protect one of Florida’s most vital resources—water—by working at the Southwest Florida Water Management District. The District is a government agency whose mission is to protect water resources, minimize flood risks, and ensure the public’s water needs are met. We serve a population of nearly 6 million people in west‑central Florida as directed by state law.

The Professional Surveyor and Mapper will support the District’s Data Collection Bureau using surveying and mapping expertise. Responsibilities include post‑processing field data, collaborating with other bureaus to develop scope of work for outsourced survey consultants, reviewing outsourced deliverables for conformance with state laws and District survey requirements, signing and sealing survey deliverables, and directing field crews on various projects and survey types.

All employees may work a flexible or remote schedule. This hybrid role requires onsite presence part of the time and remote work for the remainder (must reside in Florida).

Compensation

Surveying and Mapping Professional 4: $61,254.00 – $96,006.75

Surveying and Mapping Professional 5: $66,180.00 – $

The starting salary range is based on education and experience and may be adjusted annually based on performance.

Essential Functions
  • Prepare worksheets and other surveys, manually or by computer means.
  • Read, prepare, write, and review legal descriptions and sketches.
  • Research and lay out work for survey crews, including coordinating data and preparing worksheets and files in proper format.
  • Review field notes and electronic data files for completeness and reduce for plotting.
  • Review the results of crew work and resolve any problems.
  • Perform surveying calculations on geometric problems and review calculations of others.
  • Compute control and perform statistical analysis; compute traverses, run closures, calculate sectional breakdowns, acreage, and other surveying calculations.
  • Troubleshoot, assist, and train others in software, hardware, and field instruments/equipment.
  • Office processing and CADD production of all types of surveying and mapping projects.
  • Complete assigned technical surveying programs or projects assigned by the Land Survey Supervisor.
  • Perform other related work as required.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of surveying and mapping, including Florida statutes and regulations.
  • Knowledge of COGO and CADD software and skill in surveying and drafting/CADD instruments.
  • Knowledge of legal descriptions.
  • Ability to read and interpret complex survey/engineering plans.
  • Ability to operate, process, and download field surveying instruments.
  • Ability to reduce and plot field notes and perform computations.
  • Knowledge of basic management principles.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, other agencies, and the public.
  • Registered as a Professional Surveyor and Mapper in Florida (Chapter 472, Florida Statutes).
  • Proficiency with Civil 3D CADD, Leica Infinity, and Trimble Business Center.
  • History of successful project/task management.
  • Excellent customer service and ability to meet project schedules.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Planning, organizing, and managing multiple assignments concurrently.
