Basic Function
HF Sinclair is seeking a Rotating Reliability Engineer in El Dorado, KS to conduct engineering studies and recommend improvements to the reliability of refinery equipment. Responsibilities include investigating equipment problems and failures (RCFA), recommending preventative measures, expediting planned and unplanned repairs, training employees in machine use and lubrication, and providing overall refinery support for Reliability Programs such as Condition Monitoring, Preventive Maintenance, Critical Equipment Monitoring, Lubrication, API standards application, and repair standards development.
The role directly interfaces with safety, maintenance, project, and process personnel as well as contractors.
- Evaluates equipment performance and provides reliability improvement recommendations using RCM analysis; assists maintenance with troubleshooting rotating equipment problems in the field.
- Champions the rotating machinery bad actor program and develops strategies for its resolution; interfaces with equipment suppliers on retrofits or upgrades.
- Sets up and audits Equipment Health and Performance Monitoring and Protection programs, both automated and manual, ensuring they meet industry standards and best practices; modifies programs by updating IOWs, CODs, SOLs, alarm and trip set points with action steps based on non‑conformances and gaps found during operation and maintenance activities.
- Participates in Site Risk Register and PHA reviews and assists in identifying and risk ranking rotating equipment threats.
- Investigates equipment problems and failures for root causes and provides engineering recommendations for resolution, including economic impact assessments of alternatives.
- Assists the capital projects group with rotating equipment design and specification review (asset selection, materials, installation plans, testing requirements, critical spare parts, etc.).
- Assists maintenance and turnaround planners in developing repair work scopes for major machinery components during house repairs, external repairs, and turnarounds; aids personnel with developing and updating asset‑specific rotating repair procedures.
- Uses SAP to update equipment repair histories, provide technical data updates, and input necessary changes to equipment bill of materials.
- Assists area trainers with operating procedures for critical and special purpose rotating equipment and training documentation for operators.
- Works effectively with others at all levels and functional areas of the refinery.
A minimum of two years of progressive work experience in rotating engineering is required, with emphasis on rotating equipment experience, knowledge, and insight. Reliability engineering experience, root cause failure analysis, RCM analysis, and cause mapping experience are highly desired. Experience in refinery or petrochemical industry—including FCC, HF Alky, Crude & Vacuum, Sulfur unit, Delayed Coking, and hydro‑treating—is preferred.
Education LevelA minimum of a Bachelor's Degree in an engineering discipline is required.
Required SkillsTechnical expertise in the area of specialty; advanced ability to stay abreast of new technology developments and processes and apply knowledge analytically; strong knowledge of Microsoft products and commonly used engineering concepts and software; familiarity with rotating engineering standards such as API and ASME; effective organizational, written, and verbal communication skills; ability to learn and apply engineering principles and methods, spatial and form perception, and mathematics;
prioritization and balance of multiple priorities.
May be responsible for the supervision of in‑house craft and contractors.
Work ConditionsWork in both an office and plant environment. May be required to work from home depending on business need. Must be available during off‑hours, especially for emergencies and turnarounds.
