Purpose of Role: Weir Marine Engineering is currently looking for a Systems Safety & Environmental (SS&E) Engineer to join our Combat and Control Systems (CCS) team supporting the River Class Destroyer (RCD) Project at the Department of National Defence (DND) Office within the Bluenose building in Dartmouth, NS. On behalf of the Project Management Office (PMO) RCD the SS&E Engineer will conduct System Safety and Environmental Engineering activities across the RCD Project, identifying hazards, quantifying risks, and recommending mitigations based on best practices.

A key activity is the management of RCD Hazard Tracking System (HTS) and the production of periodic Hazard Management Assessment Reports and Safety Case Reports. The position requires collaboration and liaison with Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) to support the Independent Verification and Validation (IV&V) of Industry supplied Safety and Environmental materials. This is a full-time, permanent position with a combination of working in-office and working from home.

What you’ll do
  • Analysis: Conduct System Safety & Environment Engineering analysis across the entire RCD Capability, using various formal methods, to identify hazards, quantify risks, support safety assurance and change impact assessment, and recommend mitigation solutions compliant with Canadian Law, DND Policy & Regulations, and International Standards, such as IEC 61508, IEC 62061, and ISO 13849.

  • Process Development: Provide support to lifecycle phase reviews, support system safety engineering working Groups, and implement standards and processes such as US MIL-STD-882E and Def-Stan 00-056.

  • Technical Documentation: Development and review of technical documentation, such as Safety Management Plans, Hazard Logs, Hazard Management Assessment Reports, Safety Case Reports, System Requirement Specifications, Interface Control Documents, System Design Descriptions.

  • Support to client: Maintain positive, friendly, collaborative relationships with team members, and internal and external stakeholders. Liaise with subject matter experts, DND customers and suppliers.

What you’ll bring
  • Mandatory: Must obtain a Government of Canada security clearance, which necessitates Canadian citizenship and a minimum of 10 years of continuous residence in Canada.

  • Mandatory: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent experience.

  • Mandatory: Skilled in reading, writing, and speaking English, with the ability to effectively communicate at all levels (both in-person and electronically) with peers, supervisors, and clients. Capable of drafting reports and technical correspondence.
