Description
The purpose of this position is to help build and apply industrial system planning models to explore regional and national pathways, with a focus on multi-objective optimization to evaluate cost, labor, climate, and air quality tradeoffs. The postdoctoral scholar position is in the Sustainable Transitions Lab – an interdisciplinary lab focused on just energy and industrial transition planning – at Dartmouth College, Thayer School of Engineering.

Key Accountabilities- Serves as a major contributing member of an interdisciplinary team of systems modelers, social scientists, and data scientists exploring steel industry transitions. Helps design and implement industrial systems modeling and infrastructure planning studies. (65%)
- Authors or co-authors research findings. (20%)
- Mentors undergraduate and graduate students. (5%)
- Presents findings at conferences and engages with stakeholders. (5%)
- Assists with writing grant proposals and obtaining funding. (5%)
Minimum Qualifications
- PhD in relevant fields including energy systems engineering, operations research, computer science, decision analysis, environmental economics, environmental planning, geography, energy resources, or environmental engineering.
- At least four years of relevant research experience.
- Candidates with additional non‑academic work experience, with nontraditional academic backgrounds, and/or from members of groups that historically have been underrepresented in science and engineering are encouraged to apply.
- Demonstrated research ability and vision, excellent written and spoken communication skills, and comfort working both collaboratively and independently.
- Expertise in optimization methods, data science, and programming.
- Expertise in geospatial analysis and familiarity with geographic information systems software.
- Familiarity with modeling environmental and socioeconomic impacts.
- Familiarity with macro‑energy systems models.
- Position may be fully or partially remote for all or part of the term, at the discretion of both the research associate and supervisor.
