SJCA is seeking a Cultural Resources Associate (Historian) in Indiana.
SJCA Inc., a leading full-service civil engineering firm with offices across Indiana, is seeking a full‑time Cultural Resources Associate (Historian) to support project development requiring compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA).
This role is responsible for preparing cultural resource documentation in accordance with the most current INDOT Cultural Resources Manual and applicable federal procedures. Project sites include both rural and urban environments throughout Indiana. This position will primarily be based out of our Indy offices, with opportunities for remote work.
Primary Responsibilities- Coordinate with project engineers and project sponsors to obtain plans, project descriptions, scoping reports, and other information needed for Section 106 documentation.
- Conduct preliminary research using online mapping tools such as the IDNR SHAARD database, Indiana Map, and county GIS systems.
- Perform site investigations to document existing historic conditions and identify cultural resources.
- Coordinate with federal, state, and local agencies throughout the Section 106 process.
- Compile complete and compliant Section 106 documentation, including written text, required project mapping using ArcGIS, and photo documentation.
- Complete revisions requested by INDOT or other reviewing agencies to obtain documentation approval.
- Master’s degree in History, Architectural History, Historic Preservation, or related field; or equivalent relevant experience.
- Ability to interpret and apply INDOT and federal procedural requirements to documentation and review processes.
- Strong technical writing and research skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, ArcGIS, and Adobe Acrobat.
- Ability to work independently in a dynamic office environment with minimal supervision.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.
- Valid driver’s license and reliable vehicle.
