Project Engineer/Project Manager – Carbon Capture & Energy Infrastructure
Location: Remote with up to 25% travel (primarily TX, LA, or CO)
Hours: 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM MT preferred
Pay: $70 – $100 per hour depending on experience
Duration: 6-month contract to start with evaluation and potential extensions in 6-month intervals
Overview
We are seeking an experienced Project Engineer to support capital projects in the growing carbon capture, pipeline, and sequestration sectors. This role will work closely with Project Managers and cross-functional teams to coordinate engineering activities, manage project deliverables, and help ensure projects are executed safely, efficiently, and on schedule. This is a primarily remote position with occasional travel to project sites and provides an opportunity to contribute to innovative energy infrastructure initiatives expected to run through 2028 and beyond.
Key Responsibilities
Project Execution
- Support Project Managers in the execution of capital projects from concept through commissioning (FEL-1 through startup).
- Coordinateproject and engineering deliverables, vendor packages, and technical documentation.
- Track project and engineering progress and ensure deliverables meet project schedule milestones.
- Support development of project scopes, schedules, cost estimates, and execution plans.
- Support Project Managers in developing project cost estimate using AACE methodology.
- Support Project Managers in documenting Meeting Minutes, RAID log and Lessons Learned.
Engineering Oversight
- Coordinate review of engineering deliverables from EPCs, consultants, and vendors for technical accuracy, completeness, and constructability.
- Coordinate technical interfaces between surface and subsurface engineering disciplines.
- Participate in design reviews, HAZOPs, PHAs, and constructability reviews.
- Ensure design alignment with company standards and operational requirements.
Procurement & Vendor Coordination
- Support technical evaluations of vendor bids and equipment selections.
- Support development of RFP packages.
- Coordinate with vendors during equipment fabrication and testing
- Support Project Managers in developing and updating procurement schedule.
Construction & Commissioning Support
- Provide coordination of engineering support during construction and installation activities including management of RFI and punch lists.
- Support commissioning, startup, and handover to operations.
Project Controls & Reporting
- Track project and engineering progress against schedule and identify potential risks.
- Support project reporting including status updates, cost tracking, and schedule progress.
- Assist in managing scope changes and maintaining project documentation.
Cross-Functional Coordination
- Interface with surface and subsurface engineering, operations, regulatory, commercial, and environmental teams to ensure project alignment.
- Ensure regulatory requirements and permitting constraints are incorporated into project design.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical, Chemical, or related Engineering discipline
5–15 years of experience supporting capital projects in energy or industrial sectors including oil & gas, pipelines, compression, or carbon capture
Strong Project Management background especially within the last 5 years.
Experience supporting capital projects in energy infrastructure such as:
Oil & gas facilities
Compression and pipeline systems
Carbon capture or gas processing infrastructure
Industrial plants or process facilities
Solid understanding of project development phases including FEL, detailed engineering, and construction
Proven ability to review engineering drawings, P&IDs, and vendor packages
Familiarity with equipment such as compressors, pipelines, and instrumentation
Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills
Ability to manage multiple stakeholders and work effectively in complex, evolving environments
Preferred Qualifications
Experience supporting EPC or owner-operator project teams
Familiarity with project management tools and document control systems
Experience with compression facilities, pipelines, or carbon capture infrastructure
Additional Requirements
Willingness to travel approximately 25% for project kick-offs, team meetings, fabrication visits, and startup activities
Ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-moving regulatory and technological environment
