Position Overview

This role provides support for Energy Management Systems (EMS) power systems applications portfolio such as Power Flow, State Estimator, Contingency Analysis, Load Frequency Control, Dynamic Stability Analysis, Load Forecasting, Operator Training Simulator (OTS), and related tools. The engineer actively participates in the design, development, testing, validation, and implementation of modifications and enhancements to EMS applications.

Responsibilities
  • Serve as the technical Subject Matter Expert for the department.
  • Lead EMS portfolio projects from design through go‑live implementation.
  • Make independent decisions on most application issues, except for unusually complex scenarios.
  • Analyze complex application issues that involve in‑depth evaluation of multiple variables.
  • Work with database administrators and infrastructure teams on issues triggered from server, network, storage, or database components.
  • Test non‑functional requirements of EMS application changes and coordinate testing with database and infrastructure teams.
  • Foster strong working relationships with other internal departments.
  • Leverage professional expertise to guide projects and assist teammates.
  • Maintain expertise in power system software applications, spreadsheets, and database programs.
  • Stay current with emerging trends and industry best practices.
  • Participate in the 24/7 EMS Applications Engineering support on‑call team and troubleshoot application and system issues.
  • Assist in proactive enhancements, improvements, and issue remediation.
  • Coordinate application set‑up and testing with TDSPs, QSEs, LSEs, and REs as appropriate.
  • Perform EMS network model load testing periodically and update model data in real time.
  • Design and test EMS interface and web/client‑server application changes.
  • Support EMS applications during site failovers, server/database upgrades, and patching.
  • Support execution of disaster‑recovery drills and business‑continuity procedures.
  • Maintain, troubleshoot, and repair EMS and OTS applications and interfaces; escalation as needed.
  • Provide on‑the‑job training or oversee the work of other engineers and analysts.
  • Act as consultant, representative, and subject‑matter expert on projects affecting the EMS and OTS environments.
  • Participate in multifunctional teams to gather input, address comments, and provide application support.
  • Represent the EMS Applications Engineering Team at interdepartmental and stakeholder meetings.
  • Mentor and advise less experienced engineers and analysts.
  • Work independently on assignments and projects.
  • Participate in studies that require teamwork across departments.
  • Assist in developing tools, processes, and procedures that enhance system reliability and department efficiencies.
  • Collaborate with other ERCOT departments to select and implement system changes.
Qualifications
  • Minimum 5 years of job‑related work experience beyond degree requirements.
Preferred Experience
  • Experience with GE or other EMS vendor suites.
  • Experience with data historians such as OSIsoft PI.
  • Programming experience in FORTRAN, C, C++, Java, Perl, and PL/SQL.
Education
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or related field (Required).
  • Master’s Degree in the same fields (Preferred) or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Work Location

Location:

Taylor, TX. Employees must be on‑site minimum 2 days per week; schedules are flexible and may be rotated. Remote work is permitted from a Texas residence if acceptable to management.
