About the role
Reporting directly to the Director of Electrical Engineering, the Principal Engineer will be responsible for electrical engineering design aspects of capital projects and facility upgrades, electrical design support for planned outages, and business development/expansion projects at various operating facilities. The Engineer will lead, manage, and execute multiple electrical projects/programs, provide subject‑matter expertise, and drive technical standardization as a guardian of certain Electrical Design Standards.
Acting as a primary Electrical Engineering SME to the business, the Engineer will also mentor junior team members and share best practices.
Preferred location:
Florham Park, NJ headquarters. The role requires close collaboration with corporate functions and facilities and includes approximately 20% travel across the network, including domestic locations and low‑cost countries such as China. A remote work option is available with additional travel to Florham Park and across the network. Compensation will vary depending on location.
- Independently develop, review, and approve electrical system design documents including one line, three line, and control schematics, wiring diagrams, arc flash studies, short circuit and voltage drop calculations, and coordination studies.
- Develop scope of work for electrical engineering associates and coordinate with suppliers and contractors.
- Plan design tasks to achieve budget constraints and schedule goals for both design and construction.
- Assume the duties of technical lead and subject‑matter expert for small to medium capital programs.
- Lead electrical design scope, including system design, scope development, engineering calculations, specifications, and risk assessments for high and medium voltage systems (switch gear, transformers, motor control centers, relay/protection systems).
- Evaluate, select, and apply standard engineering techniques and procedures, making adaptations and modifications as needed.
- Serve as guardian of key electrical design standards and specifications for the Reworld electrical team.
- Update design standards and specifications periodically to reflect industry best practices and regulatory developments.
- Provide SME design support to project managers on assigned construction projects and engineer support for commissioning and installations.
- Provide electrical engineering design troubleshooting support to plant operations, analyze failure root causes, and develop cost‑effective technical solutions for root cause analysis.
- Minimum bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited institution.
- Minimum 10 years of engineering experience.
- Registered Professional Engineer or ability to obtain licensure is preferred.
- Experience with high, medium, and low voltage distribution systems and power generation in large utility or industrial co‑generation facilities, or in design/architectural engineering firms.
- Ability to work on multiple concurrent projects with minimal supervision.
- Proficiency in developing and understanding one line, three line diagrams, DC control schematics, wiring diagrams, and subsystem drawings for substations, power plants, and process plants.
- Experience with all phases of a project: preliminary conceptual design, scoping, detailed design, equipment selection, testing, and start‑up problem resolution. Voltage ranges include HV (> 100 kV) to low voltage (480 V).
- Experience with protective relaying schemes (medium voltage), including coordination and development of relay settings; SEL relay experience highly preferred.
- Proficiency in engineering software such as CAD/AutoCAD, ETAP, SKM Power Tools, SEL Accelerator, etc.
- Effective written and oral communication skills; ability to analyze data, write technical reports, and develop work packages.
