Staff Mechanical Engineer R&D – Johnson & Johnson

The Robotics and Digital Solutions (RAD) group, part of the Johnson & Johnson family of companies, is recruiting for a Staff Mechanical Engineer to join our Strategic Robotics R&D Team, based in Santa Clara, CA. Remote work may be considered on a case‑by‑case basis, subject to company approval. This is a part‑time position.

• Design and develop robotic capital hardware for use in surgical room environments.
• Iterate quickly on proof‑of‑concept prototypes, implement long‑term commercial design solutions, and engage with vendors.
• Own design & integration of key robot arm components, and work semi‑autonomously on robotic hardware development projects.
• Influence and drive architectural decisions, incorporating applicable learnings from past designs.
• Occasional travel to J&J or vendor sites may be required.

• Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or other related Engineering degree with 8+ years of experience developing mechanical hardware.
• 5+ years of experience designing surgical robotics hardware.
• Deep knowledge of mechanical engineering fundamentals (e.g., mechanisms, materials, FEA, GD&T).
• Proven experience integrating electromechanical components (including PCBAs, motors, sensors, cable harnesses, and connectors) into surgical robot applications.
• Experience using Solid Works (or equivalent CAD package), including the ability to create models, assemblies, and detailed drawings, following best design practices and standards.
• Strong communication skills and ability to work remotely as part of a hybrid team.

• Existing familiarity with hardware architecture of Ottava (or similar).

• Annual performance bonus in accordance with the applicable plan.

Pay:
The anticipated base hourly range for this part‑time position is $55.29 to $95.10. Pay Transparency (San Francisco Bay Area) – $67.79 to $109.47.
