THE POSITION
As a Nuclear Safety Specialist for the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), you will become part of a team focused on keeping nuclear operations safe and well regulated. This position offers interesting work that blends science, safety oversight, and public communication.
DESCRIPTION OF WORKThis position focuses on monitoring nuclear facilities to ensure safe operations, compliance with requirements, and readiness for emergency situations. The work supports the statewide mission of protecting public health and the environment through strong oversight and technical expertise.
- Oversight Reviews:
Conduct independent assessments of assigned nuclear power plants. - Inspection Support:
Participate in Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) inspections to verify that all regulatory requirements are met. - Safety Analysis:
Review reports on nuclear safety and environmental impacts to identify important findings. - Emergency Preparedness:
Take part in emergency drills to maintain the ability to assess plant conditions during events. - Radiological Oversight:
Inspect low‑level radioactive waste packaging and transportation activities. - Technical Guidance:
Provide support to staff, prepare reports, and assist with training and public education.
- Full‑time employment.
- Work hours:
8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, Monday – Friday, with a 60‑minute lunch. - Telework:
Opportunity to work from home up to 3 days per week with a securely configured high‑speed internet connection and an approved location inside Pennsylvania. Ability to telework is subject to change at any time. - Salary:
In some cases, the starting salary may be non‑negotiable.
- Three years of professional experience in nuclear systems safety analysis involving Boiling Water Reactors or Pressurized Water Reactors, and a bachelor’s degree in nuclear, mechanical, electrical, chemical, civil, structural or environmental engineering, or in engineering technology; or
- An equivalent combination of experience and training.
- This position requires possession of a valid driver’s license.
- You must possess and maintain a REAL passport for this position. Proof of possession will be needed at the time of a conditional offer of employment.
- You must meet the PA residency requirement.
- You must be able to perform essential job functions.
