Overview

Forensic Engineer – Mechanical or Electrical. This remote, work-from-home position requires the most qualified candidate to have a strong knowledge of the mechanical or electrical components of equipment and machinery, with the ability to travel nationwide for on-site inspections and to prepare reports with minimal oversight. The role involves root cause analysis of losses or failures and providing solutions to repair and return damaged equipment to pre-loss condition.

Responsibilities
  • Perform root cause analysis on equipment and machinery failures for various industries.
  • Consult on equipment damaged due to fire, smoke, water, equipment malfunction, or other causes.
  • Travel nationwide as needed to perform on-site inspections of machinery and equipment that have experienced a loss.
  • Prepare reports with minimal supervision and provide direction and project management for necessary repairs.
  • Assess extent of damage, determine root cause from mechanical or electrical perspectives, and communicate findings clearly to stakeholders.
  • Quantify or estimate repair or replacement costs; conduct supporting research.
  • Present solutions to repair and return damaged machinery to pre-loss condition.
  • Navigate loss sites, access equipment, and document observations through well-structured reports.
  • Maintain confidentiality and demonstrate attention to detail in all work products.
Qualifications – Mechanical Engineer
  • Professional Engineering (PE) license in the candidate’s resident state; holding a PE license in multiple states preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of mechanical engineering principles and systems (production lines, compressors, motors, gearing, conveyors, and other components).
  • Ability to identify root cause and extent of damage from a mechanical standpoint.
  • Proven leadership abilities to guide teams and coordinate multidisciplinary efforts under tight deadlines.
  • Exceptional writing skills to articulate technical situations to a layperson audience.
  • Ability to quantify repair or replacement costs and support cost research.
  • Ability to present solutions to repair and return equipment to pre-loss condition.
  • Ability to navigate a loss site, climb onto equipment, ladders, catwalks, and similar access locations.
  • Excellent time management and the ability to work with little supervision while communicating timely updates to clients and management.
  • Strong computer skills (Outlook, Excel, Word) and confidentiality.
  • Prior forensic experience as a mechanical engineer.
Qualifications – Electrical Engineer
  • Professional Engineering (PE) license in the candidate’s resident state; holding a PE license in multiple states preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of electrical engineering principles for commercial and industrial systems and determining the cause of loss for electrical events.
  • Experience with electrical components in production lines, compressors, motors, drives, elevators, and related equipment.
  • Ability to identify root cause and extent of damage to electronic components within equipment.
  • Proven leadership abilities to guide teams and coordinate multidisciplinary efforts under tight deadlines.
  • Exceptional writing skills to convey technical situations to a lay audience.
  • Ability to quantify repair or replacement costs and perform supporting research.
  • Ability to present solutions to repair and return equipment to pre-loss condition.
  • Ability to navigate loss sites and access equipment locations as required.
  • Excellent time management and the ability to work with little supervision while providing timely updates.
  • Strong computer skills and confidentiality.
  • Prior forensic experience as an electrical engineer.
Other skills and attributes
  • Strong leadership and management capabilities with a proven ability to guide teams and deliver results under tight deadlines.
  • Most qualified locations include TX, AZ, CO, or the Pacific Northwest; candidate should reside within 45 minutes of a major airport.
  • Basic electronics knowledge (e.g., PLC, switch gear, transformers) is preferred but not required.
  • Knowledge of validating repair costs is preferred but not required.
