The System Protection department oversees protection and control systems across a vast geographic area in California. We manage approximately 35,000 relays of varying vintages. Given PG&E's strategic location within the WECC and our extensive 500kV network, maintaining a highly skilled team is essential for regional stability.
Position SummaryYou will oversee System and Substation Protection, Control, and Remedial Action Schemes owned by PG&E. Responsibilities include specifying, designing, and applying protective relay packages to ensure reliable operation of transmission and distribution systems, including generation and load interconnections.
This role involves collaborating with teams such as EGI, Distribution Planning, Asset Strategy, Compliance, Operations, and Relay Test. You will also serve as a key point of contact for interconnection customers and CAISO.
This is a hybrid position, requiring work from your remote office and an assigned location two days per week.
CompensationPG&E provides the following salary ranges based on locality. Actual compensation is determined by skills, experience, education, and internal equity.
Bay Area- Minimum: $128,000
- Mid: $173,000
- Maximum: $218,000
- Minimum: $122,000
- Mid: $164,000
- Maximum: $207,000
This position is eligible for discretionary incentive compensation programs.
Job Responsibilities- Work with limited guidance on complex assignments requiring integration from multiple sources.
- Apply extensive knowledge of system protection engineering to resolve complex problems.
- Provide technical leadership and mentorship to less senior engineers.
- Plan, architect, and design complete systems.
- Manage internal and external client relationships.
- Document processes and technical specifications for protection schemes.
- Develop high-level requirements for RAS schemes.
- Provide technical support for transmission, generation, and load interconnections.
- Serve as a Subject Matter Expert (SME).
- Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering (emphasis in System Protection or electrical power).
- 6 years of experience in system protection.
- Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering (emphasis in System Protection or electrical power), MBA, or BS in Computer Science.
- PE (Professional Engineer) license.
- Proficiency in electrical engineering concepts and theories.
- Understanding of electrical circuits, relays, and protection schemes.
- Knowledge of generation resources, substation design, system operation, and T&D planning.
- Strong technical, analytical, and communication skills.
- Project management knowledge.
- Proficiency in MS Office Suite.
