Project Overview
The rapid growth of AI and digitalization is fueling unprecedented demand for data centers that require large, reliable sources of energy. In response to this market trend, the Renewables & Clean Power (R&CP) team has signed an early works contract to build one of the largest gas-fired power generation facilities in the U.S. This project is of significant scale and complexity, and our team is helping the customer progress early-stage development, which will lead to the start of full EPC delivery this year.
The candidate will act as the Start-up Planner on the upcoming project. The candidate may start in the home office in Reston, Houston or Cheyenne, Wyoming, as single status, to support preconstruction planning ahead of project mobilization to the field when the candidate will locate on a long‑term assignment to Cheyenne, Wyoming. This position is contingent upon project award.
The role of the Start-up Planner requires a good grounding in engineering work processes, planning and schedule analysis, and EPC project management requirements. The Start-up Planner provides key support to the Lead Start Planner, Start-up manager, and delivery team project controls groups in collating, analyzing, and reporting against start-up, testing and punch list clearance progress, accurately reflecting deliverable achievements, forecasting future achievements, and identifying potential opportunities and challenges.
Works in collaboration with project controls and contracts and procurement, the Start-up Planner is an important team player in achieving our challenging goals.
The candidate for this position must be a self-starter, able to work independently while remaining a team player, and capable of bringing potential scenarios and solutions to the table for group evaluation and scenario studies.
Major Responsibilities- Establishes, maintains, and forecasts the schedule for all commissioning and startup activities
- Interfaces with the construction team regularly regarding system turnover packages, including scope, sequencing, and schedule
- Works closely with Engineering and Supply Chain to help prioritize and sequence their activities/deliverables to support testing and commissioning
- Develops, maintains, and forecasts commissioning and startup progress curves
- Develops critical path schedule reports and schedule performance metrics
- Determines critical‑path activities for assigned discipline or specialty work activities supporting interdisciplinary requirements
- Identifies and reports activities that have a critical or potential impact on the schedule
- Monitors and validates subcontractor schedules
- Evaluates subcontractor schedules for required workarounds or potential schedule improvements
- Requires bachelor’s degree (or international equivalent) and 8–10 years of relevant experience or 12–14 years of relevant work experience
- Skilled in oral and written communication with demonstrated skill to present information to management and clients
- Proficient with PC operating systems and various essential software applications; advanced knowledge of multiple discipline-specific programs currently utilized at Bechtel, such as Primavera P6, Primavera Risk Analysis, and Microsoft Office Suite
- Ability to take initiative in project-related tasks and coordinate with various stakeholders
- Ability to multi-task and prioritize workload to ensure effective project delivery
- Ability to work effectively both independently and in a team atmosphere
- Has an intermediate familiarity with engineering, procurement, contracts, construction, and startup processes as executed by Bechtel
- Proven data management skills, ideally with some database development background
- Able to carry out document research in a logical, structured manner
- Possesses an intermediate understanding of conducting Quantitative Schedule Risk Analysis
