Environmental Engineer
Freese and Nichols is seeking a motivated Water Resources Engineer‑in‑Training (EIT) to build a long‑term career with our growing Stormwater team in Austin, San Antonio, or Corpus Christi. In this role, you will help communities across Texas solve complex drainage, flood risk, and infrastructure challenges that directlyimpactpublic safety and quality of life. You will work collaboratively alongside experienced engineers and technical specialists on projects ranging from watershed studies and master drainage plans to urban drainage design and nature‑based solutions.
Our team partners with municipalities and agencies across Texas to deliverpractical, innovative drainage solutions that protect lives and property. This role offers meaningful technical responsibility, mentorship toward PE licensure, and the opportunity to contribute early in your career.
- Open channel and storm sewer systems
- Detention and water quality facilities
- Drainage master plans and capital improvement programs
- Drainage impactanalyses
- Regional flood planning
- Conduct field investigations and/ordata collection to supportmodel anddesign development
- Develop and refine engineering modelsordesigns under the guidance of licensed engineers
- Prepare technical reports, construction plans, specifications, and cost estimates
- Identify opportunities to improve modeling workflows, design efficiency, and quality processes; contribute innovative ideas that enhance project delivery.
- Support client communications, attend meetings, and contribute technical input under the guidance of the Project Manager
- Participate in quality control reviews, address review comments, and ensure deliverables meet FNI quality standards
- Provide guidance and technical support to junior staff as appropriate
- or in Civil Engineering
- Engineer‑in‑Training (EIT) certification
- 3+ years relevant stormwater or water resources experience
- Experience with HEC‑HMS, HEC‑RAS, Civil 3D, ArcGIS Pro, and Microsoft Office suite
- Demonstrated ability to prioritize work, meet commitments, and deliver high‑quality results under deadlines
- Clear written and verbal communication skills
- Demonstrated initiative and willingness to learn
- Experience with HEC‑RAS 2D, XP‑SWMM and/orInfo Works
- Certified Floodplain Manager (CFM) certification
- Experience with programming or scripting (ex. Python) for data analysis, model or workflow automation and result visualization
- Familiarity with Texas municipal drainage criteria
