What Your Job Will Be Like:

Dept 6634 is seeking a postdoctoral candidate to work on radiation detection and identification problems.

The successful candidate will develop/use analysis algorithms for radiation detectors, develop/use radiation transport software, and perform laboratory measurements.  The department develops and maintains GAmma Detector Response and Analysis Software (GADRAS) for the rapid analysis of gamma spectra, gamma detector response simulation, and radiation transport.  The software combines the detector response function with full spectrum analysis and is the gold standard for fast identification of radiation sources.

Opportunities for a post-doc include software development, algorithm development and improvement, and detector characterization experiments for problems of national importance.  There may also be opportunities to further develop neutron transport and analysis methods for multiplicity detectors.  The successful candidate will work with a core team of 5 staff, developing software and making measurements, to improve real-world capabilities to detect and characterize radiation sources.

Due to the nature of this work the selected applicant will be required to work on site.

Qualifications We Require:

¿ Ph.D. in nuclear engineering or similar studies with a theoretical understanding of radiation transport.

¿ Software development skills (especially C++, C#, or FORTRAN)

¿ Ability to obtain a DOE Q security clearance.

Qualifications We Desire:

+ Experience measuring radioactive sources using radiation detectors.

+

Experience with object-oriented programming.

+ Linux experience.

+ Experience using radiation transport software (especially GADRAS).

About Our Team:

The WMD Detection and Threat Analysis department, 6634, performs applied research and development for WMD detectors and associated assessment algorithm and software tool development, conducts field testing and data collection, and provides leadership and support for real world responses to nuclear/radiological incidents. Some department personnel lead and support key aspects of Sandia's Nuclear Incident Response Program (NIRP) that are led out of 6630.

The department has a solid core customer base through NNSA NA20 and NA80 and also supports several key customers including DoW, FBI, and DHS. In particular, the department has an established reputation with government agencies and commercial industry in the field of radiation detection and emergency response. In collaboration with other departments in 6630, the department has growth opportunities in the development of advanced R&D capability development to support the NIRP and related missions.

Posting Duration:

This posting will be open for application submissions for a minimum of three (3) calendar days, including the 'posting date'. Sandia reserves the right to extend the posting date at any time.

Security Clearance:

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and…
