Join the Department of Transportation as a Civil Engineer (Transportation) and help shape safe and reliable travel across our state. This position offers the chance to take on meaningful engineering challenges that support Pennsylvania communities.
This position focuses on engineering work that supports the design, review, and inspection of transportation structures across the Commonwealth. You will help ensure that bridges, culverts, and related systems meet safety and performance standards. As a Civil Engineer (Transportation), you will perform the following duties:
- Structural Design: Develop structural plans and compute material quantities for bridges and related structures
- Technical Review: Evaluate consultant submissions and design documents to ensure compliance with standards
- Hydrologic Analysis: Prepare and review reports and permit materials for waterway impacts and approvals
- Bridge Inspection: Assist with inspections and determine bridge ratings using approved engineering methods
- Project Coordination: Collaborate with consultants, agencies, and internal units throughout project development
- Plan Preparation: Assemble and check final engineering plans, reports, and supporting documents
- Full-time employment
- Work hours are 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
- Telework: You may work from home part-time up to the approved location inside Pennsylvania. If unable to telework, you may report to the headquarters office in Hollidaysburg. The ability to telework is subject to change.
- Salary: Selected candidates who are new to employment with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin employment at the starting annual salary of $69,203.00 (before taxes).

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:
- Successful completion of the Civil Engineer Trainee training program (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration); or
- Five years of civil engineering experience in the appropriate specialty, and an Engineer-in-Training certificate issued by or acceptable to the Pennsylvania State Registration Board for Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors and Geologists; or
- Four years of civil engineering experience in the appropriate specialty, and an engineer‑in‑training certificate issued by or acceptable to the Pennsylvania State Registration Board for Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors and Geologists, and an associate’s degree in civil engineering technology or a closely related engineering discipline; or
- One year of civil engineering experience in the appropriate specialty, and a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or a closely related engineering discipline.
- This position requires possession of a valid driver’s license.
- PA residency requirement is currently waived for this title.
- You must be able to perform essential job functions.
