We are seeking a detail-oriented GIS Technician III to support the input, processing, and maintenance of Alabama Power distribution lines and equipment assets within an ESRI GIS database
.
This role requires experience with GIS data maintenance, strong attention to detail, and the ability to work in a team environment. The position will begin with an estimated training period of approximately 3 months onsite in Birmingham, AL
, after which the role may transition to primarily remote work with occasional in-office requirements for meetings, training, or business needs.
Candidates must currently live within a reasonable commuting distance of the Birmingham, AL office.
Key Responsibilities- Input, process, update, and maintain electric distribution line and equipment asset data in an ESRI GIS database.
- Review and validate GIS data for accuracy, completeness, and consistency.
- Maintain records related to Alabama Power distribution assets.
- Support GIS mapping, data editing, and database maintenance activities.
- Work with internal teams to resolve data discrepancies and ensure accurate system updates.
- Use ESRI ArcGIS tools to support utility distribution mapping and asset management.
- Follow established procedures, standards, and quality requirements.
- Participate in training, meetings, and other business‑related activities as needed.
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- One of the following is required:
- Bachelor’s degree in Geography, GIS, or a related field
- GIS Certificate
- At least 2 years of full‑time GIS work experience
- Experience with ESRI ArcGIS software required.
- Proficiency with standard computer software, including Microsoft Office Suite.
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
- Must be flexible to work 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday.
- Must be able to work 8‑ or 10‑hour shifts, starting as early as 7:00 AM and ending as late as 5:00 PM.
- Must currently reside within a reasonable commuting distance of Birmingham, AL.
- Experience with ESRI ArcGIS Pro

- Experience with CAD / Computer‑Aided Drafting.
- Prior utility, engineering, or infrastructure mapping experience.
