Job Overview
TEKsystems is seeking a Remote Network Engineer for an Alaska‑based client. The position is 100% remote with Alaska business hours 7‑4 / 8‑5 AKT Monday to Friday and is equivalent to a Senior Network Engineering position. The engineer will be responsible for engineering planning, design, equipment evaluation, project management, installation specifications, and test & acceptance for existing and advanced networks to ensure cost‑effective enhancements and upgrades to meet network requirements.
Responsibilities- Write technical work orders with clear goals, vision, and step‑by‑step instructions for complex work.
- Architect, implement, and manage Layer 2 and Layer 3 VPN network solutions.
- Monitor and maintain BGP peering for internet traffic.
- Design and implement DIA / IP‑Transit services.
- Support FTTH / DSL to deploy and support dual‑stack subscriber management.
- Implement and support QoS‑based converged data / voice network.
- Support Solarwinds and other NMS for 24/7 NOC monitoring.
- Communicate, collaborate, and support multiple teams.
- Work on‑call troubleshooting with other team members and network technicians.
- Evaluate, analyze, and validate new technologies with carriers / vendors.
- Train and mentor junior / entry‑level network engineers.
- Maintain complete technical documentation.
- Drive and support automation for complex processes / workflows.
- Suggest improvements to network performance, capacity, and scalability.
- Multitask with multiple project assignments.
- Collaborate closely with Inside Plant Engineering, Network Planning, Outside Plant Engineering, and Operations.
- Engineer and implement network enhancements in a cost‑effective manner using professional business approaches.
- Provide engineering and technical support for internal and external customers.
- Plan, develop, design, and manage network projects in conjunction with capital plans and customer demand.
- Evaluate network security issues and recommend changes to minimize concerns.
- Recommend advanced technologies, both software and hardware, that are cost‑effective.
- Maintain inside plant records and drawings for facilities.
- Build positive interface with all departments to ensure timely completion of assignments.
- Plan overall equipment layouts in central offices and remote facilities.
- Coordinate growth and maintenance concerns with Building Engineering, OSP Engineering, and CO Maintenance.
- Ensure projects meet industry standards.
- Apply demand forecasts, sales, and technology evolution to network design.
- Maintain professional contact with suppliers, vendors, and industry peers.
- Research and present technical material verbally and in written form to technical and non‑technical audiences.
- Active JNCIP‑SP certification preferred.
- 5+ years of experience in network planning, design, and implementation.
- Extensive knowledge of routing, switching, and firewall systems.
- Advanced technical experience in OSPF, ISIS, BGP, and MPLS.
- Technical understanding of Juniper and Ciena hardware and configurations.
- Familiarity with WDM transport systems.
- MEF‑standard based service for Layer 2 and Layer 3 circuits.
- QoS and firewall policy for scalable deployment.
- Access transport and service technology (FTTH, VoIP, pseudo wire T1, DSL).
- Segment routing and traffic engineering.
- Application servers (DHCP, DNS, radius, LDAP) to support various services.
- AC/DC power systems.
The role is 100% remote and offers flexibility with Alaska business hours.
