Job Summary

We need a hydrologist to help drive our agency toward accomplishing our vision. The Hydrogeologist will be versatile and forward-thinking, tackling problems outside the box with passion and technical skill. This position is available for remote work on a full-time basis within Arizona. Remote work is permitted under the State’s Remote Work Program, subject to prior authorization.

Job Duties
  • Review environmental technical program documents and applications.
  • Issue Aquifer Protection Program permits within required licensing time frames.
  • Support Groundwater Quality Monitoring and Pesticides programs.
  • Perform environmental calculations.
  • Review and prepare hydrologic maps.
  • Interpret trends in hydrologic and environmental data.
  • Aid and help the regulated community, staff, and the public.
  • Review or prepare hydrogeological models to analyze pollutant fate and transport.
Knowledge
  • Principles of ground and surface water flow.
  • Principles of fate and transport of chemicals in ground and surface water.
  • Agency policies, state and federal environmental regulations.
  • Remedial technologies.
  • Chemical composition, structure and properties of substances and their transformations in the environment.
  • Arizona geography, aquifers, and surface water bodies.
Skills & Abilities
  • Excellent interpersonal, written and oral communication skills.
  • Balance, prioritize and organize multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Work collaboratively in teams and across organizations.
  • Collect environmental samples according to standard operating procedures.
  • Utilize computer applications and programs for daily tasks, data acquisition and documentation.
  • Create surface feature maps and geologic cross sections based on collected data.
  • Follow guidance documents, standard operating procedures and technical instructions for environmental tasks.
  • Coordinate field and office tasks efficiently.
  • Summarize completed tasks or monitoring results in reports for senior staff.
  • Excellent problem‑solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Apply statistics to environmental data during decision making; identify data gaps.
  • Evaluate maps and cross sections to make assumptions regarding contaminant flow across media.
  • Utilize site-specific environmental data to create environmental models.
  • Ability to present environmental data and findings to the public.
Selective Preferences Hydrogeologist 2
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Hydrology, Environmental Engineering, Civil Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Geology (with hydrogeology emphasis), Mechanical Engineering, Environmental Science, Earth Science, Soil Science, or Law.
  • Master’s may substitute for 2 years of experience.
  • 2-4 years of experience; “Geologist in‑training” certification preferred through the Arizona Board of Technical Registration or an equivalent organization in a reciprocal jurisdiction.
Hydrogeologist 3
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Hydrology, Environmental Engineering, Civil Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Geology (with hydrogeology emphasis), Mechanical Engineering, Environmental Science, Earth Science, Soil Science, or Law.
  • 5 years of experience;
    Master’s may substitute for 2 years of experience.
