Controls Engineer

Job Description

The Controls Engineer designs, develops, and implements control systems that support advanced automation processes and equipment. This role programs PLCs and HMIs, integrates controls with mechanical and electrical systems, and ensures that automated material handling and sortation systems operate safely, efficiently, and reliably. The position offers the opportunity to work in a small, dynamic automation-focused startup environment with significant room for professional growth and frequent travel to project sites across the United States, Mexico, and Canada.

Responsibilities

+ Design and develop control systems for new and existing automation equipment, including material handling and sortation systems.

+ Program PLCs (Programmable Logic Controllers) using platforms such as Rockwell and RSLogix to support automated processes.

+ Develop and configure HMIs (Human-Machine Interfaces) to provide intuitive operator interfaces and system monitoring capabilities.

+ Troubleshoot and resolve issues with control systems, PLCs, HMIs, VFDs, and related automation equipment to minimize downtime.

+ Collaborate closely with mechanical and electrical engineers to integrate control systems with overall equipment and facility designs.

+ Conduct testing and validation of control systems to ensure performance, reliability, and compliance with project requirements.

+ Develop, maintain, and update documentation for control systems, including electrical schematics, diagrams, and manuals.

+ Use AutoCAD to create, review, and modify electrical drawings and control panel schematics.

+ Read, interpret, and clearly explain electrical drawings and control documentation to team members and onsite staff.

+ Provide technical support to maintenance and production teams, including troubleshooting assistance and on-site problem resolution.

+ Deliver training and guidance to onsite personnel on the operation and maintenance of control systems and automation equipment.

+ Travel regularly to project sites, including large distribution and logistics facilities such as warehouses and parcel handling centers, to support installation, commissioning, and ongoing service.

+ Work within a 10-4 rotation schedule when assigned to projects, adapting to varying onsite needs and timelines.

+ Contribute to a small, early-stage automation team by sharing expertise, supporting new initiatives, and helping refine internal standards and best practices.

Essential Skills

+ Demonstrated experience in PLC programming, including development, modification, and troubleshooting of PLC logic.

+ Proficiency with Rockwell platforms and RSLogix software for PLC programming and configuration.

+ Hands-on experience in HMI programming and configuration for industrial automation systems.

+ Experience in controls engineering, particularly in automated material handling and sortation systems.

+ Working knowledge of VFDs (Variable Frequency Drives) and their integration into control systems.

+ Familiarity with Ethernet-based industrial communication networks used in automation environments.

+ Ability to read, interpret, and explain electrical drawings and schematics to team members and onsite staff.

+ Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field.

+ Knowledge of PLC programs and control system fundamentals.

+ Experience using AutoCAD for creating and modifying electrical and control system drawings.

+ Willingness and ability to travel 50-70% of the time to project sites.

+ Flexibility to work varying hours when traveling and supporting onsite activities.

+ Capability to work effectively from a home office and communicate clearly with remote and onsite teams.

Additional

Skills & Qualifications

+ Internship experience in controls engineering, automation, or a related field.

+

Experience with materials handling and sortation systems in logistics, warehousing, or distribution environments.

+ Exposure to large-scale automation projects in facilities such as warehouses and parcel handling sites.

+ Comfort working within a small, dynamic startup environment with evolving processes and responsibilities.

+ Ability to operate effectively with a high degree of autonomy while managing multiple projects and travel commitments.

+ Preference for candidates located in the Midwest region and able to work in an eastern time zone schedule.

Work Environment

This role is primarily remote, with the Controls Engineer working out of a home office and traveling frequently to project sites across the United States, Mexico, and Canada. The position follows a Monday through Friday schedule, typically from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 or 5:00 p.m., with hours varying when traveling or supporting onsite commissioning and troubleshooting. Travel requirements range from 50% to 70%, and a 10-4 rotation may apply during project assignments.

Project sites include large warehouse and logistics environments, such as distribution centers and parcel handling facilities, where the engineer will work…
