As an Early Career Mechanical Engineer you will support the design and analysis of building mechanical systems for industrial and government facilities. This role involves assisting senior engineers and project managers with HVAC, ductwork, piping, and plumbing system design, engineering calculations, drawing development, and construction support.
Key Responsibilities- Assist senior engineers with the design of HVAC, plumbing, and piping systems, including B31.3 process piping
- Perform basic engineering calculations under direct supervision, such as:
- Heating and cooling load calculations
- Pipe and duct sizing
- Equipment selection support
- Create and revise engineering drawings using AutoCAD, Micro Station, Revit, Smart Plant, or similar drafting tools.
- Apply applicable codes, standards, and procedures (e.g., IMC, ASHRAE, NFPA, ASME)
- Attend project meetings and training sessions as required
- Maintain organized project files, drawings, and documentation
- Follow established quality assurance programs and procedures
- B.S. Mechanical Engineering from an ABET accredited engineering program.
- 0 to 5 years in industrial/government design of Mechanical, HVAC, Plumbing Systems, and related mechanical building systems.
- Ability to work in a group of engineers and designers to complete technical portions of projects within established budgets and schedules.
- Familiarity with discipline‑specific tools such as:
Carrier HAP, Trane TRACE, AutoCAD, Micro Station, etc. - Knowledge of applicable codes & standards (International Mechanical Code, NFPA, ASHRAE, etc.).
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Engineering‑in‑Training (EIT), or ability to obtain
- Strong analytical, problem‑solving, and communication skills
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook)
- Self‑motivated and team‑oriented professional with high personal integrity
- Primarily office‑based work in a secure engineering environment
- Amentum office location is preferred; hybrid or remote work may be available by prior agreement based on role and project requirements
- Occasional exposure to industrial facilities, which may include elevated noise levels, hazardous materials, or controlled areas
- Site visits may be required
- Ability to sit or stand for extended periods
- Ability to lift up to 35 lbs occasionally
- Vision correctable to 20/20
- Ability to read and use computer‑aided design software effectively
- Appropriate PPE and training will be provided as required
- U.S. Citizenship required (no dual citizenship)
- Valid driver's license is required
- Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance
- Ability to pass pre‑employment background investigation and drug screening
- Willingness to work overtime or outside normal hours as needed
- Professional appearance appropriate for a customer‑facing engineering environment

$75,000 - $115,000
