Job Summary:

This position conducts inspections, investigation, testing, and sampling to recognize, evaluate, control, and anticipate employee exposure to environmental factors as a result of chemical, physical, ergonomic and biological hazards and recommends methods to abate the hazard. Provides professional and technical industrial hygiene services and guidance on safety and health matters to ADOT management and employees statewide, This position provides assistance to the Asbestos Program Manager.

This position serves the entire State and requires frequent travel including occasional overnight stays.

This position may offer the ability to work remotely, within Arizona, based upon the department's business needs and continual meeting of expected performance measures.

Job Duties:

Conducted Industrial Hygiene inspections and testing to address workplace health issues throughout the State, Testing includes (but not limited to} indoor and outdoor air monitoring and noise metering and sampling of surfaces for potential harmful substances (lead, asbestos, chemicals, mold).

Manage and maintain the hearing Conservation program, exposure control program, respirator protection program, and confined space entry program for the agency and update these programs to comply with regulations, standards, and best management practices.

Answers technical questions, interprets regulations, consults with management, employees and external customers on safety and health issues and concerns. Advise management and employees on the need for safety and health protective equipment based on work environments and established regulatory requirements. Maintain the Safety Clothing catalog.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):

Knowledge of:

• Comprehensive knowledge of industrial hygiene principles, practices, and hazards which includes their related toxicological effects and Implications and means of abatement.

• Federal and state statutes such as OSHA and EPA/AHERA.

• Methods, procedures and techniques used in collecting and testing such samples as asbestos, dust, mold, mists, fumes, vapors, nose, radiation, hazardous waste and biological agents.

• Agency policies, rules and procedures related to safe performance of ADOT activities.

Skills in:

• Recognize hazards and develop practical solutions to minimize employee exposure.

• Communicating degree of risk based on observations of work environment and/or activities.

• Effectively present safety training materials.

• Write effective reports on technical subjects, policies, and instructional
documents.

• Operate and maintain environmental sampling equipment.

• Google Platform.

Ability to:

• Recognize health, environmental, and physical hazards in ADOT work places.

• Select sampling equipment or technology to provide adequate information to evaluate a hazard.

• Recognize when data integrity during sampling and studies is questionable or valid.

• Prepare comprehensive investigative reports, technical reports, and field investigations.

• Interpret complex regulations, codes and apply them to ADOT situations.

• Organize and maintain permanent records and other technical records In an orderly manner for ease of access.

Selective Preference(s):

Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AERA) accreditation as Building Inspector and Contractor/Supervisor certifications.
Certified Industrial Hygienist. Four years industrial hygiene experience in the public or private sector.
