Position Summary

The Remote Maintenance Worker (RMW) provides training and technical assistance to rural utility water operators both in the office and in the field. The RMW is expected to possess, or be willing to develop, a comprehensive range of construction and general maintenance skills including pipe fitting, electrical work, and carpentry. The RMW must be able to effectively teach these skills in person and via video conferencing.

Primary responsibilities include delivering on‑site training and instruction to utility operators, emphasizing preventative maintenance of water and sewage infrastructure, reviewing sanitation facility designs, and conducting routine communication with operators and site visits. In emergency situations the RMW may be required to travel and provide short‑notice technical assistance. This position reports to the Environmental Health Manager.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities
  • Obtain water and wastewater operator certifications in water treatment, water distribution, wastewater collection, and wastewater treatment.
  • Maintain routine contact with water and sewer utility staff and provide over‑the‑phone technical assistance and troubleshooting.
  • Assist in developing and implementing preventative maintenance plans, maintaining critical spare part lists, updating O&M manuals, and managing inventories of tools and equipment for existing and new facilities.
  • Establish and uphold a regional travel schedule to include approximately 20 trips per year to provide routine operation and maintenance support for each community served by the RMW grant.
  • Provide on‑the‑job training and technical assistance to operators up to Level II water systems in the production and distribution of drinking water to meet or exceed State and Federal standards.
  • Provide technical assistance to operators of up to Level II wastewater collection and treatment facilities in the treatment and disposal of wastewater to meet or exceed State and Federal standards.
  • Coordinate formal classroom training opportunities and continuing education unit instruction necessary for water and sewer operators to maintain skills and certifications.
  • Assist utilities in ordering the supplies and equipment needed for operation and maintenance of water and sewage systems.
  • Review sanitation facility designs and inspect construction of new sanitation facility projects for operational and maintenance considerations.
  • Assist local officials and governing bodies in determining costs associated with the operation and maintenance of their sanitation facilities.
  • Attend regular meetings with project managers, design engineers, regional technical assistance providers, and Office of Environmental Health team meetings when not traveling.
  • Provide intermittent emergency response assistance and technical assistance as necessary related to emergency repairs on village water and sewer systems.
  • Prepare detailed trip reports and quarterly summaries describing activities, root‑cause troubleshooting, system deficiencies, and proposed corrective actions.
  • Identify capital improvement projects to correct structural deficiencies and share information with utility and sanitation project managers.
  • Assist utilities with water and wastewater sampling requirements and logistical support to certified laboratories.
Job Qualifications
  • Remote Maintenance Worker I: High school diploma or GED equivalent, two years of experience in water and sewer operation and maintenance (or related vocational certification/degree). Ability to read, comprehend, and communicate about safety aspects of small water system utility operations. Thorough knowledge of utility systems and ability to instruct operators. Current Alaska driver’s license and insurable driving record for Maniilaq vehicles.

    Ability to lift up to 70 pounds.
