What Your Job Will Be Like

We are seeking a motivated research engineer to lead cutting-edge research in advanced microelectronics and integrated circuits for radiation hardening and hardness assurance for national-security missions. Each day offers opportunities to collaborate with other leading radiation effects engineers and scientists.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Innovate effective semiconductor technologies for assuring the radiation hardness of advanced microelectronic integrated circuits.
  • Discover and characterize the physics of radiation effects in advanced microelectronics.
  • Create transistor and circuit models and designs to improve the radiation performance of integrated circuits.
  • Publish research results in journal articles and present at conferences.

Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite.

Salary Range

$102,400 - $199,700

Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require
  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline, or an equivalent combination of directly relevant education and engineering or scientific experience in the field of integrated circuits.
  • Ability to acquire and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance.
Qualifications We Desire

The ideal R&D S&E Electronics Engineer candidate for Sandia National Laboratories will in addition possess the following:

  • Graduate degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a highly related field where an independent research project was a graduation requirement (e.g., independent project, thesis, or dissertation).
  • Demonstrated experience with analog and digital circuit design and analysis.
  • Hands-on experience testing and debugging circuitry, with mastery of tools such as oscilloscopes, logic/network/spectrum analyzers, function/pulse generators, etc.
  • Proven experience with design and analysis tools (e.g., Matlab and LabVIEW), analog simulation codes (e.g., LTSpice), and HDL simulation codes (e.g., Model Sim).
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams.

Also, for this posting we are seeking individuals with the following experience:

  • Knowledge of radiation effects, radiation testing, radiation hardening, or hardness assurance in microelectronics as evidenced by publications, patents, or conference presentations.
  • PhD in Electrical or Electronics Engineering or a related STEM field.
  • Leadership and program development experience.

The Advanced Microsystems Radiation Effects team (org. 5251) develops, integrates, characterizes, and assures the radiation hardness and reliability of advanced microelectronics for national security applications. We are actively investigating leading edge technologies from commercial manufacturers with a rapidly growing portfolio of projects in partnerships with defense and government agencies.
