Power Distribution Field Designer

Sigma Technologies, Ltd. Shreveport, Louisiana, United States Supply Chain

About this Position

This hybrid role combines field data collection with design responsibilities, focusing on overhead power utility pole design and make‑ready engineering. The position primarily serves Northwestern Louisiana, Northeast Texas, and the West Arkansas border, with the flexibility to travel outside these areas, including overnight trips.

Responsibilities
  • Perform utility pole walkouts and field surveys to gather attachment, clearance, structural, and owner data.
  • Document existing conditions, capture photos, measurements, GPS data, and field notes to support design decisions.
  • Research right‑of‑way, easements, permitting constraints, and property ownership as required.
  • Execute overhead distribution and make‑ready designs in compliance with NESC and client standards.
  • Evaluate field conditions to determine make‑ready requirements, attachment rearrangements, and pole replacements.
  • Perform pole loading analysis and clearance resolution.
  • Develop comprehensive, construction‑ready design packages and perform end‑to‑end joint‑use or general distribution design.
  • Use design platforms such as DDS, AutoCAD, Micro Station, Katapult, O‑Calc, GIS, or utility‑specific systems.
  • Collaborate with engineering, project management, and quality teams, and support quality‑control reviews.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; associate degree or higher in engineering, drafting, or related field preferred.
  • Minimum 1 year of experience in power distribution design, or make‑ready engineering/joint‑use design (2+ years strongly preferred).
  • Demonstrated experience performing utility pole walkouts and field data collection to support design work.
  • Proven experience applying NESC standards, clearance analysis, and pole loading concepts.
  • Proficiency with CAD or Micro Station; strong preference for experience with DDS, Katapult, O‑Calc, or similar platforms.
  • Strong understanding of overhead power distribution construction practices.
  • Ability to work independently in the field and translate field conditions into accurate designs.
  • Valid driver’s license and auto insurance; ability to pass background, drug, and motor‑vehicle screenings.
  • Authorized to work in the United States.
  • Willingness to perform local fieldwork with occasional overnight travel and a Monday–Friday schedule aligned to Eastern Time.
Travel, Schedule, and Work Environment
  • Position is remote when not performing field data collection; regular local fieldwork is required.
  • Field work includes Northwestern Louisiana, Northeast Texas, and the West Arkansas border; project areas may change based on business needs.
  • Availability during core hours 8:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. Eastern, with flexibility for local fieldwork, travel, and occasional overtime.
  • Dependable personal vehicle required; mileage reimbursement provided.
  • New hires must attend a 2‑week in‑person paid orientation and training at Sigma Technologies headquarters in Perrysburg, Ohio.
Physical Requirements
  • Endure frequent, lengthy periods of sedentary work and prolonged driving.
  • Operate computer and field equipment for extended periods.
  • Perform fieldwork, including driving, walking long distances, navigating uneven terrain, working near roadways, and operating in various weather conditions.
  • Lift and carry field equipment up to approximately 40 pounds.
  • Use good vision and communication skills for detailed analysis and instruction.
