Public Works​/Stormwater - Senior Civil Engineer

Job Summary

City of Hampton invites you to join our vibrant waterfront community as a Civil Engineer. The role focuses on planning, design, and construction support for the Department of Public Works, with an emphasis on infrastructure management within the City’s Stormwater Management Program. The position reports through periodic meetings and operates independently under limited supervision.

The incumbent supervises and directs project team members to ensure project schedules stay on time, stay within budget, and meet the City’s requirements. They coordinate with city departments and outside agencies, and may be required to work outdoors, after normal hours, and during emergency situations.

• Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or closely related field.
• Three (3) years of full‑time equivalent experience in Stormwater Civil Engineering.
• Engineer‑in‑Training (EIT) certification or equivalent.
• Must be a licensed Professional Engineer (PE) in the State of Virginia or have the ability to obtain licensure within one (1) year of employment.
• Valid driver’s license with a satisfactory driving record per City of Hampton criteria.
• Background check and substance‑abuse testing as required for safety‑sensitive positions.

• Frequent travel throughout the City.
• Extensive contact with city departments and related outside agencies.
• Some duties performed after normal working hours and outdoors in all weather conditions.
• Considered “essential personnel” during City emergency situations, which may include long hours and unusual schedules.
