Position Overview
Join the Department of Transportation, District 5 as a Transportation Construction Inspector and shape the state’s infrastructure. In this role you’ll work directly with materials used in major construction projects, ensuring work meets safety and quality standards.
Responsibilities- Conduct inspections and observe testing of asphalt, concrete, and aggregate materials to confirm compliance.
- Review accuracy of test methods, reports, and weigh slips to ensure materials meet project specifications.
- Maintain records in required systems, verify plant documentation, and enter data into electronic databases.
- Identify potential issues during sampling or testing and report findings to the supervisor.
- Confirm calibration of equipment used by both Department staff and vendors.
- Assist with sample collection, field reviews, and activities across transportation project sites.
- Full‑time employment.
- Work hours 7:00 AM – 3:00 PM, Monday–Friday, with a 30‑minute lunch break.
- Hours may shift due to vendor availability.
- Telework:
Part‑time work-from-home possible after probation, requiring a secure high‑speed internet connection and an approved Pennsylvania location. Telework may change at any time. - Salary:
Starting annual salary of $45,907 for new hires in Pennsylvania (pre‑tax).
Required Experience, Training & Eligibility
- One year as an Engineering Technician or equivalent federal position.
- Two years as a Transportation Technician or Construction Cost Technician 1.
- One year of construction inspection experience and an associate’s degree in civil, mechanical, geotechnical, surveying engineering technology, or a related field.
- Three years of experience in highway or bridge surveying, design, construction, or inspection.
- Three years of experience in quality control of materials or construction industry experience, including reading blueprints and plans.
- Equivalent combination of experience and training.
- Special requirement:
Possession of an active non‑commercial Pennsylvania Class C driver’s license or equivalent. - Other requirement:
Must meet the Pennsylvania residency requirement. - Must be able to perform essential job functions.
