The Position
The Senior Traffic Engineer serves as the Transportation Engineering Division Manager in the Public Works Department. The role leads a team of five full‑time staff, overseeing transportation planning, traffic engineering, traffic safety for all modes of travel, traffic calming, private development review related to traffic engineering, and responding to traffic requests and inquiries. The division manages an annual operating budget of approximately $1.1 million and supports capital projects and grant funds.
KeyInitiatives
- Continue solicitation and evaluation of Neighborhood Traffic Calming Program (NTCP) applications.
- Complete corridor studies for Jefferson Street and Redwood Road funded by the Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) grant program.
- Support updates of various county‑wide transportation planning documents.
- Lead and develop the transportation engineering team, providing technical guidance and professional oversight.
- Manage project planning, implementation, and completion to achieve desired outcomes.
- Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to address traffic-related requests and inquiries.
- Maintain and grow a high‑performing, diverse workforce through talent management, succession planning, and recruitment strategies.
- Apply data‑driven analysis to improve traffic safety, traffic flow, and overall transportation network performance.
- Excellent technical and professional knowledge in traffic or transportation engineering.
- Strong project management skills and experience overseeing complex projects.
- Effective coaching, conflict resolution, and staff development abilities.
- Demonstrated ability to influence decisions, optimize diversity, and engage in strategic planning.
- High emotional intelligence, political astuteness, and commitment to public service.
- Clear, concise communication skills for verbal and written presentations.
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Traffic, Transportation, Civil Engineering, or a closely related field.
- Five (5) years of progressively responsible experience as a professional engineer in traffic or transportation engineering, including supervisory responsibilities.
- Registration as a Professional Traffic Engineer or Civil Engineer in the State of California with good standing.
- Valid California Class C driver’s license at time of hire and ongoing maintenance.
