Job Description

The Energy Engineer will lead and support NYC Local Law 87 compliance projects, including energy audits, retro-commissioning, and reporting for a diverse portfolio of buildings such as offices, courthouses, schools, and hospitals. This role combines hands-on fieldwork, building system analysis, and direct client interaction, with the opportunity to work on high-profile public-sector projects and to mentor junior engineers within a growing, collaborative firm.

Responsibilities

+ Perform comprehensive Local Law 87 energy audits and prepare all associated compliance reporting for a variety of building types.

+ Conduct regular site visits and field assessments at multiple locations, with travel costs reimbursed.

+ Lead or support retro-commissioning efforts and building system optimization to improve energy performance.

+ Analyze building systems, including HVAC, lighting, and controls, to identify and quantify energy efficiency opportunities.

+ Collaborate closely with junior engineers, providing technical guidance and direction in the field.

+ Interface directly with clients, maintaining a high level of professionalism, responsiveness, and clear communication.

+ Support and deliver projects across commercial, healthcare, and institutional facilities, including DCAS-related work.

+ Contribute to the development and implementation of energy conservation measures and retrofit strategies.

+ Assist in managing project timelines and deliverables to ensure on-time, compliant submissions for Local Law 87 and related projects.

+ Participate in internal team meetings and knowledge sharing to enhance best practices in energy engineering and building performance.

Essential Skills

+ 6-8+ years of experience in energy engineering or building performance.

+ Strong, hands-on experience with NYC Local Law 87 compliance, including audits and reporting.

+ Proven experience conducting energy audits and/or commissioning or retro-commissioning projects.

+ Ability and willingness to perform frequent site visits and work regularly in the field.

+ Strong communication skills with the ability to work directly with clients and project stakeholders.

+ Technical proficiency in analyzing building systems such as HVAC, lighting, and controls for energy efficiency opportunities.

+ Experience working on DCAS projects or similar public-sector building portfolios.

+ Background in retrofitting or implementing energy conservation measures.

+ Experience managing or guiding junior staff in the field and in project execution.

Additional

Skills & Qualifications

+

Experience with energy efficiency and energy engineering best practices in commercial, healthcare, and institutional buildings.

+ Familiarity with Local Law 97 and related NYC energy and carbon regulations.

+ Demonstrated ability to optimize building systems through retro-commissioning and operational improvements.

+ Comfort working on multiple projects simultaneously and adapting to varied building types and client needs.

+ Interest in contributing to a growing firm with a strong pipeline of Local Law 87 and Local Law 97 projects.

+ Ability to collaborate in a supportive team environment and mentor junior engineering staff.

Work Environment

The role offers a hybrid work schedule, with work-from-home on Mondays and Fridays plus additional flexible remote days each year. The position involves frequent local site visits throughout New York City to offices, courthouses, schools, hospitals, and other commercial, healthcare, and institutional facilities, as well as occasional travel of approximately 10% for projects across the United States, typically up to one week at a time.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Queens, NY.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $45.00 - $60.00/hr.
