Position Summary
Lead Inspector for the School Safety unit of the Transportation Planning and Management Division. Under the direction of senior staff, the candidate will manage a group of inspectors, oversee field investigations, and support the siting and installation of signage along K-12 school frontages in NYC in accordance with NYC DOT engineering standards.
Responsibilities- Supervise inspectors, monitoring workload, performance, and productivity.
- Conduct and review field investigations, including curbside/intersection inventories, traffic control and land‑use assessment, radar speed surveys, and traffic/pedestrian volume counts.
- Ensure the quality and adherence of work to all requirements and standards.
- Coordinate assignments to ensure timely completion of work orders, studies, and project deliverables.
- Recommend and implement process improvements.
- Maintain data entry, analysis, database maintenance, and preparation of forms, reports, correspondence, memos, and logs.
- Possess and maintain a New York State Driver’s License and be able to work outside in all weather conditions.
- A master’s degree in transportation engineering, mathematics, urban planning, architecture, landscape architecture, urban studies, or related physical and social science fields; or
- A baccalaureate degree in engineering from an accredited college and one year of full‑time satisfactory experience performing technical work on roadway transportation and traffic studies and area‑wide traffic programs; or
- A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two years of full‑time satisfactory experience as described in "2."; or
- An associate degree or completion of 60 semester credits from an accredited college and four years of full‑time satisfactory experience as described in "2."; or
- A four‑year high school diploma or its educational equivalent and six years of full‑time satisfactory experience as described in "2."
- To be assigned to Assignment Level II, the candidate must have an additional year of experience as described in "2."
- To be assigned to Assignment Level III, the candidate must have an additional two years of experience as described in "2."
- Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and the Sign Information Management System (SIMS).
- Experience conducting field investigations, training staff, and reviewing the work of field inspectors.
- Strong leadership and supervisory skills.
- Must have a New York State Driver’s License.
- Eligible for remote work up to two days per week under the Remote Work Pilot Program.
- New hires must reside in NYC for the first two years of employment.
- Work location:
55 Water Street, New York, NY 10041. - Hours/shift: 35 hours per week, 8:00 am to 4:00 pm.

- New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment; certain titles may be eligible to reside outside the city.
